Image permission layout[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you edited Mutter erde's talk page using a script to notify him of missing image permissions. Could you go to Commons:Village_pump#Missing_permissions_issue and say exactly how you did it please, because it's not properly substing. Oh, and I blanked the talk page again as ME is indef blocked. -mattbuck (Talk) 00:26, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

would you reconsider?[edit]

Hello ALE! I saw your vote here, where you said:

"Support because of File:No Israel.svg! Why? Because this is what freedom is about. Everybody should be able to express his/her views or shoudl be able to create whatever image he wants as long as he/she stays within the legal limits (which here is the case). BTW: Although OsamaK uploaded this image. It is not used anywhere and especially not on his user page. So please all, calm down a little bit and reconsider"

May I please ask you a question, if you are to see this one and this one, would you reconsider your vote, and if "no" why not? I am asking because I'm trying really hard to understand where ends freedom and starts propaganda and where end the images that are in the scope of the project and start the images that were created to make a point? Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 (talk) 03:51, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All people also have a live outside Wikipedia and Commons. They are free to express their personal opinion as long as it does not influence their work and the nutrality of Wikipedia. The anti-Israel image itself, carries a political message. But so does also an image of swastika. The latter is allowed on Commons, so why not the anti-Israel image? However, the important thing is, in which context such an image is used whether it used on contents pages of Commons or Wikipedia. Personal user pages are exactly that, personal. --ALE! ¿…? 22:37, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for response. I found Userbox guidelines on English Wikipedia. It clerly states:

"Wikipedia is not an appropriate place for propaganda, advocacy, or recruitment of any kind, commercial, political, religious, or otherwise, opinion pieces on current affairs or politics, self-promotion, or advertising."

It also states "Userboxes must not be inflammatory or divisive." I am not sure why Commons should be any different. Maybe you could explain it to me too? BTW I do not feel like you answered my initial question. If I may, I'd like to repeat it please. While supporting osamak nomination you said about the image :
" It is not used anywhere and especially not on his user page. So please all, calm down a little bit and reconsider."
So the question is: now, when it is used on his user page, would you reconsider? I guess you will not, excactly because the image is used on his user page, and not somewhere else. If one day I'll come back to your talk page and provide you the link of this so called image used on contents pages of Commons, you would come up with a new argument why it is OK. Anyway I'm afraid now you need to come up with a new reason to calm the opposers down next time you are to nominate osamak . The image is used on osamak user page. One more thing: I would not call the image "anti-Israel". The image and the user boxes the image is used in are simply calling for Israel destruction, but who cares about such minor details? Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 23:35, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Opinions are diverse, and so are personal points of views.
I am just saying that as long as a personal opinion does not influence the work on Commons, it does not matter to me. And by saying this, the discussion is over for me, because the adminship discussion is also over and there is no point to keep on this discussion. Thanks! --ALE! ¿…? 09:50, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gracias. Category:Arturo Illia has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Images that are not categorized do NOT get deleted just for that reason. Your images (especially the road maps) are using copyrighted material (the original map in the background) and have to be deleted for that reason. I fear that there is not much you can do. --ALE! ¿…? 09:11, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ale, It's Www3cubed about those artist permissions. Could you let me know - fairly quickly if I only have a week to email it - if every painting needs to be mentioned or if I can block authorize the gallery page?

Thanks Ale, Www3cubedWww3cubed (talk)

You can send an authorisation for all paintings of the artist. That is the easiest way. If the artist wants to restrict the permission to specific paintings, the filenames and titles of the paintings should be mentioned. If you need more time than aweek, please tell me. --ALE! ¿…? 23:01, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will need more time to clear up the permissions / copyright issues and set them straight. I believe it can be done by the end of the week although a bit more time would be appreciated in case I'm wrong. Thanks. -- Www3cubed (talk) 13:32, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ale!

I am trying to help a friend put up a photo of the subject on the Richard M. Weiner entry in Wikipedia. I asked him for the source and permission of the photo and he sent me this:

The photograph has been taken by Fotostudio Erika Althaus, Frankfurter Strasse 15, 35037 Marburg.
Since it is a paid portrait photograph, there should be no copyright problem.
Richard Weiner asked me to thank you for your help.
Regards,
Herbert

Could you please let me know if this is adequate info for the copyright and should I send another letter to OTRS? Also what would the format for posting it be? or perhaps where to look for the information. Many thanks, Www3cubed User talk:Www3cubed 20:15, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please refer to Commons:OTRS. All the necessary information on how the sending of permissions works is there. I do not deal with these, so I can not tell you whether this is sufficient. --ALE! ¿…? 10:31, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, please replace the "missing permission" template with the {{OTRS pending}} template until you receive a OTRS ticket number. --ALE! ¿…? 20:19, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can not replictae your problem (See: [4]) Please try again. BTW: Do not use text in the images. This is against our guidelines. So I have tagged the example given above also with the tag {{Watermark}}. I would really appreciate if you could upload the images under the same name without text in it. Thank you! --ALE! ¿…? 07:42, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I kind of dread the consequences of what I think you're saying, it's a problem with about half of the images posted, but Richard, the artist, does not, it's just something that has to be done. To explain: The images have come from his website, www.richard-rappoport.net, where they already have the type on them, also some of them are from posters, so what Richard will do is find the orignals and send them to me for posting. I'm involved because Richard, who is one of my oldest friends, doesn't have an internet connection and simultaenously has a horror of technology in any form.
Obviously this will take a bit of time to get together. I think what we'd like do do is upload them in batches so we can start altering the site more quickly. My basic question is it possible to leave the site up while we work on it? I don't have an estimate right now of how much time it will take but I hope to give you one in the next couple of days. Many thanks for your patience and help --Www3cubed (talk)
I do not quite get what your problem is. Which site do you mean. Richard's website or commons? --ALE! ¿…? 20:26, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ale!, I meant Richard's website. Of the 57 total uploads 20 are already OK; I have 29 others that should be ready by the beginning of next week. hopefully by the end of this weekend, and 8 I will try to have by the end of the following weekend - Richard has do a little research to find the untitled versions.
So 20 are good, 29 others finished by September 7, and the final 8 by September 13. I would hate to loose the entire structure of the website - it took so much work to finish. Is this acceptable? Www3cubed (talk) 22:41, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You mean timewise here on commons? Sure. Just put the {{OTRS pending}} template on the description page of the images and the files will not be deleted. (If that is what you mean.) --ALE! ¿…? 22:39, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is precisely what I mean, Thanks, Www3cubed (talk) 10:32, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, ALE!!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

The only thing you can do is to ask the publisher of the VCDs to give you a permission to use the images under a free license in Commons and Wikipedia. A "normal" keep would have been sufficient ;-). Well it's nice to have a permission now. So we can close the request.

You recently had an image, Teatro en la actualidad.jpg, deleted. As I understand, you did so because you noticed the same image on Infobae. Please allow me to point out that internet news sites in Argentina will frequently use images from Wikipedia. I started editing on this site around September 2008, and remember noticing the image almost immediately; the Infobae article you mentioned was dated July 3, 2009 (the date is on the upper left-hand corner). I hope you'll reconsider.

Anoter: the FARC flag, that I drtaw according a sheet provided by the organization when a delegation was in catalan Countries, with autorization of free use, and was supresed alleging that the logo in the flag was copyrigted, but next day the same flag with the same logo was accepted with no problem because was draw by an anglosaxon and/or any influent commomns member. This man copied the image from me and plagied my work, and Commons are a sort of delinquents that authorize it and protege him.

Answer[edit]

You say:

Yes, I can. In Spanish law all donations can be revocated by cause of ingratitude.

Yes, I can, I upload only in catalan wikipèdia. All the images loaded in catalan wikipèdia are according catalan law, and not elegibles for others projects (if not all at less many) like a "fair use"

Yes, I have now more than 350.000 flags (not counting the city flags). Commons don't merite them. They are very ofensives and even thieves, as a destructive sect. Neither water for them.

--jolle (talk) 16:09, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can understand that you are angry. However, your licenses are NOT revokeable. Please read Wikipedia:Revocation of our licensing is not permitted. Hola Ale.

--ALE! ¿…? 22:14, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your unwarranted tagging[edit]

You have been tagging a lot of Italian stuff for no source, even when uploader gave a source. That does not make sense. And when those tags are to stuff that is 500 years old like File:Pal col 1400.jpg, it only makes Commons look more ridiculous than it already is. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 10:50, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PS: I now see that you even blocked the uploader. That does not make any sense att all! Who else can give the source in the form that you understand? Please unblock ASAP. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 10:50, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You might call it ridiculous. I call it tagging without care. How should we check whether the work is still copyrighted if the source is not precisely given? Just quoting a book (edited in 2000) does not help at all. Furthermore, the uploader has been blocked due to his long history of uploading copyvios (see his talk page!). He has been informed several times that his tagging of other people's work is not sufficient. I I do not think that unblocking makes much of a change as also as an IP he or she can provide the info. --ALE! ¿…? 12:45, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Trade mark or copyright[edit]

Dear ALE:

Why can't I change the license tag if I consider it is wrong? ... For example, about this edit you reverted: > File:Logo_gabinete_argentina.gif .... I wonder how you supported this can be "own work" by the uploader when it was obviously taken from here ?
Law 22362 clearly specifies that no one can attribute the copyright of a national or provincial symbol (like user Legui does in File:Bandera_de_la_marina_argentina_de_1818.PNG, and you agreed that was tagged as "own work" (?). That's the reason what I changed the tag. The coat of arms is PD, but not an own work by him.
Another edit you reverted: File:Prefectura naval argentina.png, where the uploader says: "I, the copyright holder of this work...". I didn't know that a single person can be the "copyright holder" of a symbol of Argentine army. There are many pages where this image can be taken, like this: [11]. This license is obviously wrong so there is no original authorship, but you supported this again.
I'm strongly convinced that Law 22362 DOES apply in all those cases, because the clause cited clearly refers to what can be copyrighted or not. Otherwise, anyone may upload a flag or coat of arms and tag it as "own work" (even when the work is a jpg taken from the web as I explained above). Do you support this class of "license" ? Pretty rare, coming from an administrator. I only tried to be collaborative according to the rules of Commons and I acted following my convinctions. But your position is, believe me, hard to understand.
Regards, Fma12 (talk) 16:57, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Fma12,
sorry to contradict you, but you mix up copyright law and trademark law.
The law you are citing, Law 22362, is a trademark law. Trademark laws are something totally different from copyright laws, because e.g. copyright law might apply but trademark law not and vice versa.
Commons bases its decision ONLY on copyright law.

Was würdest du in meinem Fall machen?
LG --K4210 (talk) 17:21, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
--ALE! ¿…? 08:51, 20 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please send the permission to Commons:OTRS. Read there for instructions.

Hi. When you have a moment, could you do me a favor. I decided to occupy my time to list the no-FoP files in Italy. It has been a long and difficult work that needs to be reviewed by administrators. Please, could you check if everything is correct on User:Raoli/Deletion requests/FoP Italy? Thanks! Raoli ✉ (talk) 18:35, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I really do not have the time to go through everything now. BUT I would porpose to handle things differently, as there seems to be an exception for state-ownd buildings, right? First, make a general deletion request stating that there is no FoP in Italy and that these files have to be deleted. Put some examples in the request (not more than 10, but from different categories, like buildings, sculptures, etc.). Link in the request to your listing. Second, if the request for deletion is successful, Administrators will delete the files without further case to case discussion. This is why including all files is not efficient. It just makes the discussion longer. --ALE! ¿…? 08:43, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. In the Italian copyright the government buildings have no exception (they are in copyright). The only exception is for the buildings that are in the public domain. These buildings are protected and handled by a specific administration called "Sovrintedenza." i make the request in Commons:Administrators' noticeboard‎. I'll put the examples as soon as possible and I'm going to link request with list. A little while ago I spoke with my lawyer about Copyright in Italy and I'm trying to understand better. User:Andreu 35[edit]

--PigeonIP (talk) 15:26, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Was bleiben kann in Ruhe lassen. ;-) --ALE! ¿…? 07:19, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
--PigeonIP (talk) 13:27, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Is it correct now?[edit]

I have tried to correct the mistake. Hope its correct now. Please check the picture. If it is still insufficient please help me to correct. I have to add the information in others images too. I have published the images converting the PDF into jpeg which are published with CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence. -Krish Dulal (talk) 02:04, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

NC-ND licenses are not ok on Commons: See: Commons:Licensing Furthermore, we would need some proof that the books are really in the public domain. --ALE! ¿…? 08:58, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:Gauteng00.jpg[edit]

I have just spent the last hour creating this file and tidying it up. Which part do you suspect of being a copyright violation? Paul venter (talk) 14:18, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The map itself. Where is it from? --ALE! ¿…? 16:07, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is a representation of provincial boundaries defined by the Government of South Africa and is not subject to copyright. I find your speedy deletion of this file without any discussion or good reason to be precipitate. Paul venter (talk) 05:15, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I make a deletion request out of it, so this can be further discussed. --ALE! ¿…? 07:38, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, somebody else has already deleted this file. So, if you want this further discussed you have to make an undeletion request. --ALE! ¿…? 07:40, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bundesarchiv-Bilder croppen[edit]

@Wozu: Bilder auf Commons sollen kein "Watermark", also keinen Wasserzeichen-Text enthalten. --ALE! ¿…? 07:46, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:ComandosAnfibios-Marines.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

ArchiveBot[edit]

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1.
