Hello, Ras67!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Better source request for Image:ET leaves MAF.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:ET leaves MAF.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the help desk or me at my talkpage. Thank you. High Contrast (talk) 07:58, 8 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

File:Mappa ferrovie retiche.svg edit

Thanks a lot, but I still don't understand what went wrong. I saved the source code, edited it with Notepad (Windows 2000), changed "rgb(0, 0, 0)" in line 19 to "rgb(255, 255, 255)" to remove the border, and it looked just fine in Firefox. Can you please explain what exactly caused this problem ? - Erik Baas (talk) 01:24, 4 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately not, I guess your Firefox has converted the SVG source code in an incompatible manner. For instance in the original I don't find an "rgb" term:

<rect style="fill:#ffffff;fill-opacity:1;fill-rule:nonzero;stroke:#000000;stroke-width:1.50000000000000000;stroke-linejoin:bevel;stroke-miterlimit:4;stroke-dasharray:none;stroke-dashoffset:0;stroke-opacity:1" id="rect5865" width="568.96063" height="492.52011" x="-8.6864223" y="-9.6537113" transform="translate(69.137299,266.63455)" />

Your code:

<rect style="fill: rgb(255, 255, 255); fill-opacity: 1; fill-rule: nonzero; stroke: rgb(255, 255, 255); stroke-width: 1.5; stroke-linejoin: bevel; stroke-miterlimit: 4; stroke-dasharray: none; stroke-dashoffset: 0pt; stroke-opacity: 1;" id="rect5865" width="568.96063" height="492.52011" x="-8.6864223" y="-9.6537113" transform="translate(69.1373, 266.635)"/>

The parameter of the fill command is changed from rhombus and hexadecimal ffffff to rgb and decimal (255, 255, 255).
In the second place the file says at the beginning it is encoded in UTF8, but Notepad saves per default in ANSI code, perhaps a fault.
Kind regards,--Ras67 (talk) 03:50, 4 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Notepad is not the problem, Firefox is. There are 3 ways to save a SVG file:
  • right mouse button on image -> save link as...
  • click on image to let FF show the SVG -> save page as...
  • click on image to let FF show the SVG -> show source -> copy/paste to Notepad -> save as...
, and they all give totally different results... :-(
Thanks again, I got a bit wiser... ;-) - Erik Baas (talk) 22:01, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey Ras67, can you tell us how (with what) you made the job?
Fototipps und How to reduce colors for saving a JPEG as PNG erläutern schon eine Menge.

Would you please take a look at File:Grindelwald Bachalpsee.jpg ? Looking at the reflections in the water, I think it needs rotating 3 degrees CCW, but Finavon disagrees. - Erik Baas (talk) 11:33, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

In my opinion yes, about 2.5 degree ccw, but it is difficult to assess the perspective, spherical aberration and so on. This photo is probably from the same vantage point and shows the scene in similar angle like Grindelwald Bachalpsee.jpg. Coincidence? In this Category are good photos to comparison. He gave source (Farell Private Collection) however it doesn't determine anything about the file itself. Its creation date, author are not known, though still file is double licensded - as a heir and an author, which makes no sense. Moreover, possesing a file doesn't mean that you own its copyrights and certainly its not written that. Therefore I tagged it and asked the uploader to clarify this situation. As you can read in his user talk, it's not the first time (not counting other files tagged by me). Sorry that I erroneously pasted the warning template in your user talk. Hi,

The image File:Maria Mandel.jpg is a 2005 scan, that's a valuable information to be able to track the image source.

Hi Dereckson, usually I'm annoyed over the lost of metadata in edits from other users. In this case I assessed the information as irrelavant about scanner, time of scan and software, but of course it could be interesting. Kind regards --Ras67 (talk) 19:30, 9 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Craigboy, your image was a downsized version of the high resolution NASA original. Commons wants the highest available resolution/quality e.g. for printing. For the MediaWiki software it makes no difference whether the file is small or big. Here are the guidelines: FAQ and Why we need high resolution media? Hine's photo edit

Hello, I appreciate your cropping this image[2], but I'm curious why you drained the color out of it? As you can see from Hine's wikipedia entry [3], Hine's photographs are well-known enough that they're usually presented in the way they were initially presented. Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 23:05, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, the picture is obviously a black and white photography. I removed the yellowish discoloration "losslessly", so that Jpegcrop's cropmask better fitted. Jpegcrop can only crop alongside a 16 pixel border on YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling, instead 8 pixel without colors. If desired, I can normally process the picture without limitation, but this is not lossless, although the generation loss is small. Greetings, Ras67 (talk) 00:19, 13 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ah, okay, many thanks for letting me know. Quite complicated, I see. Thanks for your efforts. Is there a way to normally process the picture, so that more of the 'discoloration' is retained, if you see what I mean? Thanks! MarmadukePercy (talk) 06:37, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Now, the image was normally cropped and slightly leveled. I've converted the 'colors' from Adobe RGB 1998 to sRGB IEC61966-2.1, because the most browsers don't interpret color profiles and sRGB is the standard. If this 'colors' ever were intentional, i can not tell. --Ras67 (talk) 17:56, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello again. Noticed your 'losslessly cropping' this image. The point of this is to maintain the rough edges of the image so that it can be seen as an original watercolor. Could you please try again, or I'll take it to the workshop? If you're unable to do that, let me know and I'll simply revert. Thank you. MarmadukePercy (talk) 02:21, 30 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that's correct. Please do not straighten the image, but simply lose the black background. That's the point here, to retain the nature of the amateurish authorship of the original image. If you need guidance, I can supply you with past images where this has been done.[4] Thanks. MarmadukePercy (talk) 02:45, 30 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

@Ras67 Warum kein lossless crop? -- Perhelion (talk) 18:39, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hallo Perhelion, meinst Du vielleicht CellarDoor85?

lossless cropping edit

Dear Ras67!

The file size of File:Bundesarchiv B 145 Bild-F088809-0038, Berlin, East Side Gallery.jpg has increased, this is a clear sign for a none-lossless cropping. Please use a lossless cropping tool. I have reverted you edit. --ALE! ¿…? 13:46, 16 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Lieber ALE!
--ALE! ¿…? 07:12, 17 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Do you know why it doesn't display correct (a MediaWiki bug?)? In my pdf viewer (okular) it is correct. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 04:06, 31 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Zitat: This is not an MW/extension bug. Problem is that PdfHandler gets the PDF page dimension with a call to the pdfinfo command (an Xpdf tool). But pdfinfo returns the *physical* page dimension, not the *displayed* page dimension (i.e. it does not take into account the page rotation parameter; not really a bug, just a design choice).
Als Lösung wird vorgeschlagen Solutions are: 1) use something else and not pdfinfo 2) apply the following patch to pdfinfo.
Pdf: Ich habe ihn einfach reopened.

Jebel Arkenu edit

Hallo Ras

I confirm that the Image Jebel Arkenu .jpg comes from the NASA site which is in the description page. I checked in the history of my browser and the link is still there. Bye alex2006 (talk) 07:56, 9 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your co-operation. If this special photo is not yet there, we have many high resolution alternatives. --Ras67 (talk) 14:05, 9 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Your image came from here and is probably not a NASA file. --Ras67 (talk) 21:51, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pere Colom lesbo 1.jpg edit

Hello, you have added an image above to Wikimedia Commons, i would like to thank you for making this project develop and grow. Unfortunately it seems that it has been nominated for deletion, this means that it can be deleted due to the fact that it is partially sexual in nature. Do not feel disheartened, many of the sexual images are kept here, and hopefully this one will also. But i thought that you might be interested that there are projects which are more interested in sexually explicit and freely licenced material, like Freedom Porn which distributes its content under Free Art Licence or in public domain. You may want to check it out and see if you would be interested in uploading there as well as here. VolodyA! V Anarhist (talk) 2011Nov23 17:21

I've only cropped this file, Pere55 is the original uploader, the deletion request was anyway refused. --Ras67 (talk) 23:26, 27 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

--Ras67 (talk) 23:26, 27 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for cropping (ROSSA.jpg) edit

But I wanted to ask, was there a problem with the descriptions in other languages ? you appear to have deleted them ? [6] But many thanks for the english improvements... Penyulap (talk) 16:42, 3 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure, what you mean, i have deleted the check categories tag that also shows the usage in other projects however no descriptions in other languages. Greeting --Ras67 (talk) 00:40, 4 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
On the last diff under history it seems to show the descriptions in Russian and so forth had been deleted, however, when I set prefs to Russian and look at the old version, the Russian description doesn't come up anyhow, so I don't know what it is supposed to do, maybe it's some experimental thing. I guess I can just add all the languages to the single description as a temporary measure. Unless you know how it's meant to be done ? When you upload the pic it asks for descriptions in other languages, you can add them then, but I can't see how to view those descriptions. Penyulap (talk) 06:07, 4 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Liberty Launch Vehicle edit

Hi Ras, just wondering where you obtained File:Liberty Launch Vehicle.png. The source you provided is a distinctly different image, and I cannot locate a NASA source anywhere for this particular graphic. Thanks. Huntster (t @ c) 10:12, 12 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

You have right, the reason for this problem is the strange behavior of NASA. Under this URL with the same ID KSC-2011-8113 NASA released Liberty Launch Vehicle.png of course as a JPEG with a white frame. Hours later the picture was replaced by the current version. I don't know why NASA has withdrawn the first version. Maybe because of the CST-100 spacecraft on the top of the rocket. It is impossible to prove the origin of NASA. If my oath should be not enough, you may delete the picture. Greeting --Ras67 (talk) 03:19, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I had a feeling this was what happened. Strange that it happened, but I have no problem with it remaining, if I don't happen across a copyright statement. It may be possible that the NASA webmaster simply uploaded the wrong image, or the wrong picture was provided, and then fixed the mistake, in which case the public domain statement is null and void (if NASA doesn't have the right to release something into the public domain, then it obviously isn't public domain). Thanks for the response! Huntster (t @ c) 04:16, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

thank you edit

Thank you for fixing my photograph File:St. Casimir Vilnius.JPG. How did you do it? Is it possible to fix File:Stikliu-street-vilnius.jpg?--Umnik (talk) 15:46, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is a good perspective correction tool at Paint Shop Pro. The problem is to find the right balance between correction and natural look. The eye and brain work not like a camera with shift lens. I will correct your other photo. Greeting --Ras67 (talk) 03:19, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
File:Stikliu-street-vilnius.jpg Wow!Wow! I thought that such correction reduces sharpness, but sharpness is OK in both photographs.Thank you.--Umnik (talk) 09:15, 18 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes that's right. The barrel distortion correction tools blurs a little bit more than the perspective correction tool by PSP but within limits. The selective sharpener in Photoshop balances the whole back. --Ras67 (talk) 21:37, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
