File:Sierra_kusterbeck_and_blake_harnage.JPG 45°
Hi Ras67, I am not that sure if we should overwrite such images. The previous version wasn't wrong - in fact it is better to view since it will be bigger with the same width. ;-) Depends on what is more suitable. Also the skewed image gives you a sense of dynamics. I did a similar rotation some days ago: File:Aoste hôtel de ville - rot.jpg. Thanks for your comments. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 14:03, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, a new version is probably better. --Ras67 (talk) 21:37, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Admin?
Hallo Ras67.
--Leyo 17:34, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Karte kongresspolen.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Lossless level increase (jpeg)
You just leveled a file losslessly. How did you do this? --McZusatz (talk) 21:22, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- I think level and color correction can not be completely lossless. But this tool doesn't introduce new visible artifacts. Even with high magnification, I could not discover new JPEG artifacts. --Ras67 (talk) 23:22, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hehe, I was about to ask the same for File:Pedro_Rodriguez_Lomeli.jpg ("losslessly cropped and leveled"). Lossless operations can only be cropping, rotating, maybe mirroring or maybe moving around jpeg blocks. But nearly surely not color changes. Please do not name that "lossless" then. :-D --Saibo (Δ) 17:03, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
- Maybe the betterjpeg developers are very intelligent and figured out how to do simple color changes (ie. brightness) losslessly?... I actually have no clue cause I never tested this program. --McZusatz (talk) 17:18, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
- That's just splitting hairs. Every processing of a picture causes a loss of information. BetterJPEG claims, that correction of brightness and correction of color is lossless. Even in the highest magnification in direct comparison there are no new artifacts. IMHO the tool works losslessly or almost losslessly. --Ras67 (talk) 20:27, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
- You usually cannot see new artifacts with jpeg's best quality. But you can see them when you compare the pixel RGB values. That (comparision) is not possible here as the brightness is changed. However, nothing wrong with that, but I strongly think that is just near lossless (which is more than fine(!)). --Saibo (Δ) 01:19, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Antarctica
Hello, Ras67! I think you uploaded and/or edited these images File:Antarctic_Region.png & File:Antarctica.CIA.svg. On the enlarged section on the maps, exactly where it says "Arturo Prat (Chile)" on Livingston Island, would you be able to please add a note that the following countries also have scientific bases there : Bulgaria, Spain, USA/Chile, and Argentina (wikipedia:Livingston_Island#Scientific_bases). And, if possible, move the dot for Arturo Prat up to the small island just above, i.e. Greenwich island wikipedia:File:Greenwich-Island-location-map.png) If you cannot, don't worry! Thank you, you do a great job! BigSteve
- First off, thanks for the compliments. But seriously, at first I've made a proposal with the SVG version. After your feedback I will also process the raster version. Greetings --Ras67 (talk) 21:37, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

I haven't uploaded book images in while because my method usually is zooming into the highest resolution and copying my computer screen onto a word document and then clicking the image and saving it onto my desktop and I can't use this anymore because of my new computer won't let me extract a picture from microsoft. PDF rotation
So long --Ras67 (talk) 23:38, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

--Leyo 22:31, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Bildbearbeitungen

Please do not upload over old versions
At my upload File:Wenceslas Hollar - Adrienne van Venne (State 1).jpg you uploaded a cropped version over the old version, removing some text from the original etching. Although I recognise that the cropped version is more useful for depicting van Venne, it is necessary to preserve the original version for other potential uses (e.g. for illustrating the works of Hollar). Please upload cropped versions like this under a separate filename in the future, as I have done at File:Wenceslas Hollar - Adrienne van Venne (State 1) - cropped.jpg using Special:Upload. See also the guideline Commons:Overwriting existing files. Thank you. Dcoetzee (talk) 10:13, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Hello
I see you have edited the file mentioned in the headline. There is an error on the map. The date is 1700 and the year before the Ottomans had surredered Ottoman Hungary and the Principality of Transylvania by the Treaty of Karlowitz. However, the map shows Ottoman Hungary as still controlled by the Ottomans. Could you please fix this error?
Thank you. 86.97.186.109 15:24, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- I try it, I've read the articles about it. Should the text "Hongrie ottomane" and the border to Hongrie will be deleted? And the resulting "Hongrie" painted completely yellow? Is the border between former "Hongrie ottomane" and "Empire Ottoman" correct? Is the striping of "Transylvanie" as 'sovereignty holder' correct? Regards --Ras67 (talk) 17:11, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Hello again
The text "Hongrie ottomane" and the border to Hongrie should be deleted. The resulting "Hongrie" should be painted completely yellow. As to the border between former "Hongrie ottomane" and "Empire Ottoman" being correct, I do not know. (It would probably be better to just leave it alone.) I am pretty sure that the striping of "Transylvanie" as 'sovereignty holder' is correct.
Note: I just created an account, so '86.97.186.109' is the same person as King Philip V of Spain (talk) 03:49, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Hello
Thanks for making the change. Furthermore, the border between 'Hongrie' and former 'Hongrie ottomane' should be deleted and the word 'Hongrie' should be placed in the center of the now combined lands. Also, Corsica ('Corse' on the map) was never controlled by the Habsburgs and therefore the red striping and the date should be removed from the island. The word 'Corse' would then be placed in the center of the island.
Regards, King Philip V of Spain (talk) 14:06, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Kostol svätého Juraja.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag.
There is nothing special with cropping of PNG images, but which software do you use for JPEG? Surely do you not repeat the blunder of user:January? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:51, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
- Normally I use Jpegcrop for lossless cropping if it is suitable. Due to the limitations of lossless cropping (8 or 16 pixel restriction left and above) I use Photoshop with high quality saving setting on images with valuable information within the 8 or 16 pixel lane.
- By the way if you crop a PNG image with an ICC color profile other than sRGB with software which ignore this profile you change the colors of the picture since MediaWiki and the most browsers support color profiles. Greetings --Ras67 (talk) 23:01, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello & question
Great work! I too love astronomy, manned spaceflight, and old images of aristocrats and royalty in pretty clothes. :) I appreciate the editing work you've done on some of the Bain photos.
I was wondering why you had marked File:Princess Alix of Hesse 1894.jpg with the Copyright claims template. Has the Royal Collection made a copyright claim against Wikimedia? I am only aware of the NPG claim, and as far as I know that applies only to the set of images that a specific user uploaded by bot in 2009. In other words, it is not necessary to put the notice on images (even those from NPG) that weren't uploaded by that person at that time. I have never seen the Copyright claims template on other images from the Royal Collection. Laura1822 (talk) 23:37, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for your appreciation and question. I have done this of caution. Indeed Royal Collection claims nothing directly to Commons but it says everywhere "Royal Collection © Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II". The sweat of the brow doctrine could be applied in England, the location of the pictures and so a warning is reasonable. The fact, that a warning template without NPG exists, is a confirmation for me. Of course you can present this to the copyright specialists on Commons. Warm regards --Ras67 (talk) 00:20, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
- I understand your feeling of wanting to act with an overabundance of caution, just in case; it's perfectly reasonable. I'm not sure where the copyright specialists on Commons are, but I used to be one myself, and here's what I think: the warning template says "one or more third parties have made copyright claims against Wikimedia Commons in relation to the work from which this is sourced or a purely mechanical reproduction thereof." There are probably some others besides the NPG claim, but the template doesn't say that someone might make a claim in the future, or that the possibility of a claim might exist. It says a claim has been made about this specific image. This means a formal complaint. So if the RC hasn't made, much less pursued, any allegations against Commons, the template does not apply. I am unaware of a warning template that allows for the possibility of a future claim. If one exists, then it might apply here, but I would argue that it is unnecessary, and if such a template doesn't exist, that suggests that Commons also deems it unnecessary.
- The copyright notices are very clear that the image is PD in the US and in other countries where the law is similar. It is up to a copyright holder to pursue the allegation that a copyright is being violated, and one can lose a copyright claim through failing to pursue it. Furthermore, the law for decades in both the US and the EU is that copyright notices are irrelevant: they do not convey protection by their presence, nor does their absence preclude it.
- The copyright notices such as {{PD-old-100}} (or -90, -80, etc.) and {{PD-1923}} for photographs and {{PD-art-100}} in the case of images of paintings, are sufficient. {{PD-old}} is deprecated in favor of more specific sub-templates. You might want to review Commons:Copyright tags as well. Warm regards, Laura1822 (talk) 18:35, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello
I just wanted to let you know about something I think should be shown in this map. In the English derivative of the file (File:Habsburg dominions 1700.png), Switzerland is correctly shown to have gained independence in 1648. Could you include that in this file?

Image cropping
I highly disagree that "white border and the caption belong not in the picture". Images uploaded to commons are not used just as illustrations of articles, but there are actually people who downloading these images to their computers and who using them for other purposes. Therefore, I make maps which will achieve certain standards of easthetics and which will be useful for various purposes. But, let alone my map for a momment, I also noticed what you done with this file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caffa_and_Theodoro.PNG What you done with it is increadibly bad because you removed two very important things: map info and image background. Here is why these two things are important: without info which you removed one who download that file into his computer will not know later that this map shows situation in the 15th century. Second thing: without white background map downloaded into computer will appear with dark background, letters currently written on that background will be fully unreadable, and so if one who downloads it into his computer want to have this map useful, he would have to import it into Photoshop, to recreate its white background, and then to save this file into computer again. I totally hate when I download some file with transparent background or without proper description because instead just simply hitting "Save" button, I am forced to "improve" such files in Photoshop to make them useful. Therefore, I see only trouble when useful file like this one is changed and left without useful description and background. Why you doing that anyway? Is there any benefit from such file change? Or to be more precise, if we examine one of the articles where this map is used, I see no difference for this article if any of the two map versions is used in it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feodosia However, there is huge difference if one downloads this map into his computer and map version uploaded by you is the one with error.
