Macedonia ww2[edit]

In your image of the Greece during WW2, you have wrongly labeled "Macedonia" and "Thrace." Until the 1980s, the region was collectively known as "Ministry of Northern Greece" and only during the 1980s was it renamed "Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace". Please update the image to accurately reflect the political administrations of all three regions of Macedonia. Please show sources showing the region of northern Greece was called "Macedonia" and "Thrace" by Greek political administrations or this will be nominated for deletion. 98.243.158.123 21:16, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Show sources proving the region called the ministry of Northern Greece was also called "Macedonia and Thrace" during ww2 or it will be put for deletion. 98.243.158.123 04:01, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Atlas of Greece[edit]

You removed macedonian language descriptions of the files in the article Atlas of Greece without reason, i.e. you commented your revert as: rv - by convention, only English and the native or official language are used for a country. Can you please point me to that convention.--Brest (talk) 11:25, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are, of course, quite right. Thanks for the correction. Cheers, Constantine 20:09, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Constantine![edit]

That is a great start! Now, what should be a very wonderful undertaking, would be the combination of all territories ever occupied by both Rome AND Macedonia. Could you make this image, PLEASE? I'd be extremely happy to see it and most other people probably would too.

I think this map would help begin the anachronistic overlap of Macedonia in the East and Rome in the West, Europe's two ancient empires of Hellenic descent. You and I know that Alexander's glories were the basis for Rome.

This would probably put the "Indo-European" language family into historical perspective, as well as the division of Oriental Satem and Occidental Centum. Plus, this map would show in reality a better perspective than those "Aryan race" theorists have been able to come up with. I already brought up the discussion of Medieval progression and modern nationalist romanticism on Wikipedia's Humanities Reference Desk and asked them about the veracity behind German and Russian claims to inheritance from Rome, but they didn't seem to understand. I think the Russian claims were from Greek colonies in the Crimea and Roman conquest of Scythia Minor, aside from the Orthodox Church connection when the Muslims took over Constantinople. The German claim is very obviously due to the Roman conquests as far as the Elbe, Germans in the legions and Charlemagne as king of both Gaul and Italy, founding the Holy Roman Empire with Papal approval. The discussion eventually included a consideration of Christianity as the whole realm of Roman inheritance, with Islam as succeeding Persia (in tandem with Alexandrian links to Aryan theories) likewise. I don't think that religion, only political control, should play a part in this map. 68.231.163.38 20:16, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Help requested.[edit]

Hmm, I rejected one of the DR's, based on COM:DP. I checked the other (Ieros Locos) but it is a bit complicated. BTW, it cannot be {{GFDL}}, it is either some flavor of PD or still under copyright.

Now about 79.103.21.31, it is an anonymous IP address, the usual cover for vandals and other antisocial internet lurkers. It could be a public computer facility or an internet cafe, in which case it is pointless to take any action. We must wait and see if the problem persists. If there is an action of vandalism on Commons I can block it. For en-wiki, ask an admin there to block it as well. Sv1xv (talk) 17:37, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First time I see this one. I believe it's similar to military flags like w:en:File:HellenicArmySeal.jpg. I don't know if it is authorized by the ministry of Merchant Marine or it is an in-house development. BTW, Hellenic Coast Guard rank flags are like this File:Greek_Navy_Admiral_Flag.svg but with the colors of the canton only reversed (blue star on white square).

Have you had any further encounters with User:79.103.21.31 ? Sv1xv (talk) 17:49, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I also saw this same flag at Itea Port Authority last Thursday, so it is official. I noticed that someone had filed a deletion request for the flag. I cleared it, as the flag design is prescribed in some order or circular of the Ministry of Merchant Marine, therefore {{PD-GreekGov}}. Sv1xv (talk) 19:21, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hellenic Army Regimental Colours (War Flag)[edit]

Hi Cplakidas. Great work on the Greek Regimental Colours, or War Flags. Just one thing I noticed... the colour of the blue on the flags is lighter than the one you've depicted in the SVG file (at least, that's how I remember them from my time in the Army) - closer to the shade of blue on this flag - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Crete_1898.svg. Aside from that, perfect. Keep up the good work. Dragases (talk) 08:19, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Map Byzantine themes 1025[edit]

Hi mate. Great map, and regards from a fellow Balkanologist and (amateur) cartography. I just wanted to point out to you that the map is slightly incorrect in its depiction of the coastal Slavic principalities (ie the locations of Terbounia, Zachlumia, neretvia, Duklia). Furthermore, it is contested whether Serbia was directly ruled by a strategos. There was a seal found of Constantin Diogenes stating that he was Strategos of Sirmuim, Thessaloniki and Serbia, but this might either have referred to Servia in Thessaly, or his rule in Serbia was largely nominal. In either case, Stephenson and Fine both argue that rule in Serbia and Bosnia was in the hands of local vassaled elites. Certainly, archaeological evidence suggests that the Byzantines rested their northern borders in the 11th cetury along a curved line stretching from Dyrrachium, Ras (Novi Pazar), Liplan to Sirmium. I know that the major focus of the map is the themese, but if you wanted to make your map 100% accurate, have a look at the locations of the abovementioned statelets on my maps on my user page. Great Work!

I've been watching your Roman Empire map in 400Ad and it leave me jaw wide open, its amazing, I would like to ask if you could share how you do such maps, lines, names, symbols and what program you use, it's really a treat to see them.

Great guy![edit]

I wasn't really expecting that you would answer, thanks a lot for doing it and its quite an inspiration to see ALL of your works, congratulations, you have pure art skill and a lot of patience heh!

On a final note, I would like to ask where you found the source map for the roman empire project, I'm looking to use it for a similar project of my own (an alternative reality rome) and would be great to use it, the link you give in the description "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topographic_map#Global_1-kilometer_map" doesn't appear to work unfortunately.

But really, I appreciate a lot you took the time to answer, outstanding work.

Ah, thank you!

Oh its just for a game I play, I'll be making the map, more for personal use though as well as improve my skills at "cartography", I usually use Photoshop but the alternatives you present are pretty interesting.

Thanks a lot!

You have contributed a number of Hellenic Army insignia in Category:Hellenic Army rank insignia. Unfortunately they are tagged with the deprecated {{Military Insignia}} template. The copyright paranoids of Commons have started deleting files with this tag, see Commons:Undeletion requests/Current requests. Could you please license them under a free license of your choice? I can't do it, as I am not the copyright owner. Sv1xv (talk) 18:11, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kottas and Kotas[edit]

Geia-sou - strange enough for me but it seems that in Greek the name of Kote Hristov is written with double tau and the name of the village (former Roulia) named after him - with one. So Category:Kottas Christou is for the man and Category:Kotas for the village. --Мико (talk) 08:32, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Advice[edit]

  1. Regarding the old flags, dating from 1821, I would say to keep them, although I am pretty sure that Greco22 (talk · contribs) copied them from some website. Exact (or almost exact) recreations of these flags don't produce new copyrights.
  2. Regarding the city logos, I believe all of them are quite recent designs and under copyright protection.

Seal of Omurtag[edit]

IX Jahrhundert. Bild von Omurtag mit griechischer Inschrift. Gefunden in Veliko Tarnovo.

--Alexandar.R. (talk) 16:03, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AHRB Centre for Byzantine Cultural History[edit]

Hi, Constantine.

--Alexandar.R. (talk) 21:22, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vielleicht magst Du Stellung nehmen. Die Kategorien wirken zur Zeit irgendwie merkwürdig:
  • Category:Skylitzis Chronicle
  • John Scylitzae (Seite, redirect)
  • Madrid Skylitzes (Seite)
  • Index of the Madrid Skylitzes (Seite, von mir angelegt)
Vorschlagen würde ich etwas wie:
  • Category:Madrid Skylitzes (Haupkategorie)
  • Chapters of the Madrid Skylitzes (Madrid Skylitzes umbenennen also)
  • Index of the Madrid Skylitzes (bleibt so - als Seite)

Re: Advice on propaganda[edit]

First thing, I resigned as a Commons admin a few weeks ago, I was spending too much time here and I was unhappy with many things taking place.

Now on the subject of the map, it seems that almost anything is accepted on Commons, even it is POV. However, I believe that File:Fixing the problems of Balkans and Macedonia.JPG falls under original research, as it is a proposal of what might have happened if the uploader was around in 1918. As such, i believe that it is out of scope. SV1XV (talk) 05:00, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Swjatoslaw[edit]

Hi, Constantine. (talk) 06:27, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Categories "Blue and white flag" & "Flags of Greece"[edit]

Of cource, "not all Grek flags are blue and white", but don't litter the category "Blue and white flags" with practically the same flags of the Greece. One of that will be enough. Those, who want to see other variants, no doubt, will gess to enter the category "Flags of Greece"! Besides, all Greek flags are spread along the whole category "Blue and white flags", they are present at the different pages of that. It's, really, so uncomfotable and irritates. Sorry for boter. Hi Cplakidas , you requested a rename for file:Timileon_Bassos.JPG [1], with the reason that Vassos is the correct transliteration of the name. Maps about wars of Belisarius in 6th century[edit]

Hi! I noticed that you are very skilled in making maps. In Finnish Wikipedia I have been expanding the articles about Byzantine general Belisarius and his campaigns in the 6th century. Unfortunately there is not lots of maps about them in Commons. So I was wondering if you have time to make some. In the Ian Hughes book "Belisarius: The last Roman general" (ISBN 978-1-59416-085-1) there are maps and diagrams about Belisarius campaigns and battles, such as Battle of Dara, Battle of Callinicum, Vandalic War, Battle of Ad Decimum, Battle of Tricamarum, Gothic War and the Siege of Rome. I was wondering that if it's possible then I could scan them and send them to you (Unless there are copyright laws that prevent this). You could make english .SVG versions and then I could make Finnish versions about them. Of course, I understand that you are probably busy so you don't have to if you don't have any time. But I would really appreciate if you could help me. :) --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 10:08, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Many thanks. I sent my email address to you. --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 10:48, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! How are you doing with the maps? Just asking because I have not heard anything from you for almost a week and i'm wondering that perhaps you didn't get the maps I sent to you? --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 07:10, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, great! There is also no hurry, so just take all the time you need. I'm not sure if I understand what is the difference between geophysical and outline map (yes i'm stupid). Does geophysical means that the maps also includes mountains, rivers etc? If so then it doesn't matter for me. I don't know wich one is better, so you can decide that. --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 14:34, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! :) One thing I noticed and I think it's an error: "11. Gothic army besieges Ancona". I think it should be Ariminum? Also there is typo in 12: "capture of Mediolanum and other citie". But otherwise I think the map looks excellent! Good work! --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 07:11, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and can I ask how do you make those maps? Which program you use? I'd like to try to practice making maps like that but I don't know where to start. :( --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 11:18, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the map! :) I think I found another error: en:Battle of Ad Decimum was fought in 13 September not 14? (Bury p. 132, 135 and Evans, p. 129) --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 07:41, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Sorry to disturb again, but I made two battle maps of en:Battle of Callinicum and i'd like to hear your opinion about them. File:Callinicumin taistelu 1.svg and File:Callinicumin taistelu 2.svg. File:Abbasids850.png[edit]

I noticed you corrected File:Abbasids850.png. I was wondering if Cyprus should be included as well. I believe the Byzantines only took it back in 958. StAnselm (talk) 20:56, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cyprus was a condominium shared between the Caliphate and Byzantium, and although apparently both maintained some sort of military and administrative presence there, I am not sure whether it would be correct to include it in either. Certainly the Abbasids don't seem to have regarded it as part of their dominions, only a kind of subdued tributary region. The Byzantines did make a few efforts to regain it and controlled it for a few years a couole of times, but until 958 the official status quo was as a condominium. BTW, I also think that we should use a lighter shade of green to colour Crete, the Aghlabids and Khurasan, which were more nominally rather than actually part of the Abbasid state. Fall of the Western Roman Empire[edit]

I have just put this Wikipedia article into mainspace. It has a variety of maps, all of them pre-existing since I have never tried making maps before. They include an animated gif of the expansion and decline of Rome to 530. They are acceptable, but I was thinking of replacing them by a series of gifs based on your admirable File:The Roman Empire ca 400 AD.png, to illustrate every significant change in Roman control from about 300 onward, based mainly on the series of maps in Barbarian Migrations and the Roman West, 376-568 (Cambridge Medieval Textbooks) by Guy Halsall. I suppose I can learn to use a photo-editing program and indeed my wife can help me. But I wondered if you had done anything of the sort, or if you might be considering doing so? Richard Keatinge (talk) 19:47, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Richard! First, although I've just begun reading it, I am in awe of the accomplishment that the article on the fall of the WRE represents. To say "well done" is an understatement! On the maps, I have not bothered with gif files for over 10 years now, and I am not sure how it would work with such massive files as the 400 AD map. Although I am in the midst of several projects right now, I am willing to help wherever I can. So if you need anything, feel free to ask! Cheers, Constantine 14:20, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for your kind words. I suppose I really need your advice. I like the present animated gif, but how difficult would it be to do something better? I would like to make the entire thing easy to comprehend with a fairly brief glance. I had in mind your file, with layers representing the various stages of loss of control, possibly also some symbols for major battles, and using dated versions going down the right side of the article so that the base map is standard and easier for the reader to interpret. Using your map would allow the interested reader to bring up the full version with all the detail at each date. Separate is the issue of an animated gif, but if this were made by shrinking the dated versions and re-saving them as gifs, this would allow us to present the entire story in one fairly simple animated picture at the top of the page. It wouldn't show all your detail, but it would introduce the reader to the look of your map and enable them to interpret later individual maps more easily. It looks practical to me, even with a free program such as paint.net, and I have the references and the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World. It would take me months (I'm busy in real life and my holiday will as usual involve grubbing about looking for Roman pots), but if you think it's a good way to present the information and also a practical project for a newbie map-editor, I'll give it a go. Your comments on this project will be very welcome.

I have your File:The Roman Empire ca 400 AD.png of course, but it would also be useful to have your base map - that is to say your cropped version of User:Koba-chan/Topographic map, in case we feel the need to superimpose areas of it.

Richard Keatinge (talk) 21:13, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, I sort of see what you're getting at. My opinion however is that when the primary purpose of a map is to show territorial extent, one should avoid any geophysical features other than rivers, and have a simple map with coloured territories and (optionally, depending on the size of the map and the desired level of detail) the main administrative divisions and settlements, e.g. [2], [3], [4], [5] etc. I would only suggest going to the effort of making maps similar to my 400 AD map for "landmark" or representative moments in time. I am working, for instance, on a map of 565 AD, based on the same format as my 400 AD map. On the base map, I can either upload it here or send it be email, whatever you prefer. Constantine 17:03, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I will take your wise advice and rethink my ideas. I'd still be grateful if you could upload the base map, just in case. Thanks also for your edits on the article. Richard Keatinge (talk) 10:02, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded the basemap. Constantine 10:11, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Constantine. How are you ? Do you know the date of original publication of this image ? See you. Takabeg (talk) 12:15, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Takabeg, I'm fine! Long time no see, I hope everything is OK with you as well. Unfortunately I don't know the exact date, and I can't think of any place to find it. I'd wager good money that it dates to 1919, though. It comes from the well-known photo atelier "Padova Freres", and is clearly a contemporary postcard. It should have the same date as Débarquement des Troupes Helleniques à Smyrne.jpg. Constantine 13:34, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Cplakidas. I think you are interested in military issues, especially in military of Greece. And you are well read in military history. As we know, both Greece and Turkey (off course, other counties) were parts of the Ottoman Empire, so I want to get your opinion on some categories related with military issue. When you have time, could you control Commons:Deletion requests/Category:Armour of the Ottoman Empire and what do you think of this category ? Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 05:47, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Takabeg! I've posted my view in the deletion discussion. On the Indo-Persian weapons category, my knowledge is limited. At first glance, the category name is valid, since Persia and much of northern India formed a cultural continuum since Mongol times, but I cannot really tell if the individual pieces listed therein are representative "Indo-Persian" pieces or belong to a broader spectrum of military technology. The language of these files' titles was in both Greek and English, and both were pretty much the same, i.e. the name of the exhibition these were taken from. Does this mean that if I make the requests again with Greek filenames, they will get approved? Constantine 14:02, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I would do the renames if the requests were in Greek, or the same mix of English & Greek.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:36, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

CNG coins[edit]

--Odysses (talk) 21:12, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Constantine 09:49, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Η απάντηση είναι ότι επιτρέπονται μόνο "free" images if they can be used by anyone, anytime, for any purpose (including commercial uses) (λες και κάποιος θα ανοίξει εμπόριο με εικόνες από δίφραγκα...)
--Constantine 08:51, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
--Odysses (talk) 20:55, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Flag in the Catalan Atlas[edit]

I wanted to draw your attention to a flag depicted in the Catalan Atlas. It flies over Cyprus and it has white and blue strips, which reminded me of the Greek flag and a red or gold cross with what look like 4 'B' letters around it, which reminded me of one of the flags used by the Palaeologhi dynasty. I thought this combination was very interesting, blue and white (greyish?) stripes also feature in the flag of Philadelphia, so I couldn't help but wonder whether there is any connection to the modern flag colours? I think that Cyprus was not at that time part of the Empire but Philadelphia was. Since you have contributed so much with regards to flags and history maps, I thought I could ask you if you knew anything about this flag. I also tried to create a file, not successfully;

--Varmeg (talk) 03:40, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! It is rather easy, and not Byzantine-related at all, I am afraid. The cross is the gold-on-white Jerusalem Cross, and the blue-and-white bars are the blazon of the Lusignans. In short, it is a (somewhat inaccurate, perhasps) flag of the Lusignan Kings of Cyprus. See for instance this coat of arms. Constantine 18:59, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

RfC[edit]

Dear Cplakidas, I've noticed that you have worked on WP articles about themata of the eastern Roman empire, and I was wondering whether you would like to offer your comments on the accuracy of this translation of mine. Best regards, Ασμοδαίος

There are a few minor issues with the names, e.g. the Byzantines would use Αχρίδα rather than Οχρίδα, Παραδούναβον seems to have been more common than Παρίστριον, and IIRC Θεωδορούπολις was only briefly used under John Tzimiskes and not after. Also, "Θρακησίων" is cut off at "Θρακη" leading to potential confusion. The main problem is that the map itself is rather inaccurate, with the provincial boundaries all over the place. You can get a better idea of the provincial boundaries (for the Balkans and Asia Minor at least, the East is totally inaccurate owing to a bad basemap I had used) from this. Greece (ancient) maps[edit]

Hallo, I was asked by the Graphic Lab to color and upload maps for localization of ancient sites of Greece, by modifying the existent modern maps. I'm not expert at all about ancient Greece, for I'm just a "tool" doing what others require. Now they asked me to remove internal modern boundaries from all the maps and I would like to modify also the wrong region boundaries. Please could you tell me precise instruction on where to place the right boundaries? Here the three I found (File:Greece (ancient) Chalcidice.svg, File:Greece (ancient) Epirus.svg & File:Greece (ancient) Macedonia.svg), others by you are welcome. Info and actions required about War Crosses of Greece[edit]

Concerning the:

From which year are they (1917, 1940 or 1974)? I am asking so that we can assign them in the correct category.

Do you consider them duplicates of any of those in the categories:

Please take any action as you may see fit, or let me know so that I will.

For you info, I am creating wikidata items for each of those military decorations (which can then be assigned to the persons who we know that have been decorated). --FocalPoint (talk) 08:32, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

To help the discussion: They seem to be either 1940 or 1974 medals, however:

  • the 1940 crosses have the crown
  • the 1974 have an ethnosimo / εθνόσημο

So, as these crosses have nothing on, they are .... what? something I do not know? or just inaccurate / partial design? --FocalPoint (talk) 09:05, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi FocalPoint! AFAIK these crosses are the final design of the 1974 version of the cross, finalized in 2003. The other design, with the national emblem in place of the crown, was a "transitional" adopted in 1974, but they stayed on on the principle of ουδέν μονιμότερον του προσωρινού and the Greek state's general indifference towards medals, symbols, etc. I will categorize them accordingly. Cheers, Constantine 09:11, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As per your suggestion, which is in agreement with User:Diafora, I moved them in a separate category. I a also moving there our discussion for future reference. --FocalPoint (talk) 22:49, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Need to Hire an Artist[edit]

I'm looking to hire artists to design vector coats of arms for coadb.com. I pay $1.75 USD per arms. That’s not much, but I purchase a huge +10,000 image clipart package (called Armorial Gold) for you to use, which makes the process much faster and easier. I currently have two artists who work for me, and they have earned several thousand dollars over the last 12 months. Please contact me coadb@mail.com if you are interested.Coadb1984 (talk) 13:21, 27 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Source-Map[edit]

This map's source, from which all others stem cannot even be found online (Fanula Papazoglu), is outdated and misread as whilst the sources in the page state up to Epirus it has been expanded to the south inside Epirus despite the fact that during that time Hellenistic kingdoms existed (Antigonus III Doson, Demetrius II of Macedon & others from 300 to 201 BC) whose borders are known and were above far above Apollonia halfway to Epidamnus. It pretty much erases 100 years of known historical facts.

Erm... Yes? Possibly? This is not my area of expertise, nor did I design that map, so why are you posting me? I certainly am neither qualified to judge its accuracy, and inaccuracy is, alas, not a reason for removal from Commons. Constantine 13:22, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright of images[edit]

Thank you about your comments and suggestions. The images I have uploaded are scanned from the book of William Miller The Latins in the Levant, London 1908. The book is more than 100 years old. I think the appropriate licensing template is { { PD-old-100 } } in image file description |source=. Am I right? What else and how do I have to fill, I don't know HTML. I would appreciate if you could advise me, thank you in anticipation, Aris. It's about the File:Sword of Constantine XI Palaiologos Roman emperor.jpg and the other images I have uploaded. ArisMethymna (talk) 14:01, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Aris! Good, if this is from Miller's book, then simply add him as the source. I'll give you an example on how to do it at File:Sword of Constantine XI Palaiologos Roman emperor.jpg. Please add page number(s) and any eventual links where you found the original. If an author is named for the particular image, please research him/her and add the appropriate tag. What's going on ?[edit]

Just look at that map at full screen please. Clearly, this is an old map from World War II, not a modern map. Read the specifics of en:Generalplan Ost and learn about when and how the plan came into being. Don't be ignorant about its time-frame in summaries. And please stop edit warring. You are wrong, so please face it, Poeticbent talk 22:55, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Poeticbent, I happen to be well read in World War II, thanks for assuming otherwise. Consequently I know a few things: First, there never was a "definitive" map of GPO, or of the overall German war aims. Hence presenting a map which shows stuff like annexations in the West as well (Low Countries, the Franche Comte, etc, which were all proposals), or the renaming of Berlin, which was never decided formally, is a) not about the GPO, and b) most likely to be a modern amalgamation of the various Nazi territorial acquisition schemes. Second, you have found this map not in a book or historical archive, but on imgur, with zero evidence as to its provenance. Its supposed identification and origin are your interpretation, there is no evidence presented other than your statement above "Clearly, this is an old map from World War II, not a modern map.". Third, it is perfectly possible to use Inkscape, or Photoshop, or any one of several image-making tools to create a map that looks "authentic". An "old-looking" map does not have to be old, unless you can verify its physical existence. Judging by its digital representation is never a good idea. Anyone with an inkling of the capabilities of image-making software can tell you that. Fourth and most importantly, how much more clear can it get when I actually provide you with the link of the original location of this map, published in 2013, and in a style and subject consistent with the artist's other creations (cf. [10] or [11], just for starters)?! Sorry to say so, but your message above is a staggering display of "I did not hear that" mentality. Constantine 23:05, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry I lashed out at you like this, User:Cplakidas. I apologize for it. This is the first time ever I have encountered such creative map making based on detailed study of historical record. The result was stunningly real-looking, but it was imaginary nevertheless, as I have learned thanks to you. The borders of German Reichskommissariats (R.K.) were correct. Renaming Berlin as 'Germania' came from "Hitler's Table Talk" of 8 June 1942. The extension of Nazi GENERALPLAN OST colonization by artist 1Blomma,[12] is actually confirmed by the German Historical Museum, here. A number of public domain files provide further proof of various specifics: File:Administrative divisions of Germany, February 1944.png, File:Greater German Reich in 1942.png, File:General Government for the occupied Polish territories (1941).png, File:Reichskommissariat Kaukasus.svg, File:Reichsgau Flandern.svg, etc. If I had time, I would produce a compilation of these maps for Commons to show the greatest extend of GENERALPLAN OST based on proof (similar, but more accurate). Your claim that there never was a map of the overall German war aims felt like original research to me because it was contradicted by the Deutsches Historisches Museum webpage (linked). Needless to say, I wish to thank you for letting me know what DeviantArt community of digital artists is all about. There's always something new to learn apparently. I'm wondering, how did you created such maps? Did you used some special software or just an svg editor (Inkscape?)? In the last case where did you get physical/contural (or how the blank one called?) backgrounds? Fat-Zer (talk) 00:51, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I generally use Inkscape for all maps. For geophysical backgrounds, I have used free rasterized maps. Greek flags[edit]

Would you happen to know when these flags were actually introduced?:

These flags appear in the Royal Decree of 3 June 1914 so I was wondering whether the years given are wrong or were they introduced earlier/later?

Also, would it be possible to upload the flag described "for other members of the family" (article 5)?

Many thanks. --Re5x (talk) 08:14, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Re5x, thanks for the pointer to the decree. Will do, as soon as I can (and will also take the opportunity to somewhat homogenize the bewildering array of blues used). Cheers, --Constantine 09:46, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Another thing, is this flag:

Actually described in the Royal Decree of April 1833? I believe it mentions the naval ensign (war flag), pennant, royal standard (which is what I think this file supposedly depicts??), and civil ensign (ensign without coat of arms) but not a "state flag"? Am I mistaken or is the "state flag" with the Wittelsbach coat of arms really just the royal standard or is the "state flag" described somewhere else?

What flags does the 1858 Royal Decree describe?

Thanks again :) --Re5x (talk) 16:49, 11 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up, I also had come upon the discrepancy, and was puzzled. I've corrected the various "state flags" now. The 1858 decree describes the ensign, royal standard, pennants (επισείων), naval jack (επίσημον), swallow-tailed squadron commander flag (ψαλιδωτόν μοιράρχου), the use of foreign flags (only when carrying foreign sovereigns), and the flags of the port authorities (use of the ensign in specific sizes). Text outline/path[edit]

Hi
I saw that you uploaded a new version of File:Northern Expedition 1926–28.svg in which you converted text into paths.
Did you consider this fonts/text before doing it and that the maps I design is made to be viewed at 100%. All the png's/thumbnails is out of my controll but I'm very aware there is a problem with rendered png's (thumbnails) that are not in 100% and text stretching. This has to do with the library that wikimedia uses and is out of my control. This library may be updated tomorrow or next year, I don't know, but then the thumbnail issue will be gone and we will have files with no text information in them.
As you can see on that file I have tagged it with "W3C valid source code", did you check your version for that? If it's still not valid that should be removed.
I see that you do graphic work your self so probably you know all of this and still made that decision, if so I'm sorry to have brought this info to you. --Goran tek-en (talk) 10:39, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

After moving Category:St. Andrew's castle, Preveza, Greece to Category:St. Andrew's Castle, do the images connected with the old category automatically move to the new category, or does one have to move them manually? Actia Nicopolis (talk) 16:51, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Actia Nicopolis, if you tag it with the "bad name" template, then a bot usually moves them automatically. If it is simply a category move, the you have to do it manually. Greek descriptions and text[edit]

Hi! If you have time, would you mind adding Greek descriptions to File:Greek lithograph celebrating the Ottoman Constitution.png and File:Young Turk Revolution - Flayer for the constitution.png as well as transcribing the Greek text appearing within the two images?

Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 10:38, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi WhisperToMe, done. Cheers, Constantine 11:02, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! One more thing: at File:Young Turk Revolution - Flyer for the constitution.png I would like to know the Greek for "Enver Bey" and "Postcard" as I found the French version here File:1908-mesrutiyet.jpg (sadly it doesn't seem the date at the bottom left may be legible?) WhisperToMe (talk) 11:12, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The date at the bottom is clearly something Ιουλίου 1908, so likely 11 July 1908, the date of the restoration of the Ottoman constitution in the Julian calendar. Constantine 13:08, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense! I'll go ahead and add the date too. Anyhow, if you like, would you be interested in adding a Greek description to File:1911 Ottoman Calendar.jpg and updating the one at File:Calendar Thessaloniki 1896.jpg to match the updated French and English descriptions? WhisperToMe (talk) 12:49, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also I added an annotation for Greek, French, and English for the Greek/French text at File:Belata kula Solun Ottoman Postcard.jpg. Would it be OK if you check whether the Greek is correct? Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 14:13, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@WhisperToMe: It is correct :) Cheers, Constantine 14:28, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you're interested in adding more Greek annotations, I found File:Les liberateurs de la patrie.jpg and File:Ahmed Niyazi Bey.jpg which both have Ottoman Turkish, Greek, and French (I put French above English since that at the time was the language for foreigners in the empire). File:Galatapostcard.jpg is especially interesting since it shows how cosmopolitan and multilingual that part of Istanbul was... WhisperToMe (talk) 02:59, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much! BTW I found another File:Greek_demonastration_Bitola_1908.JPG about demonstrations in Bitola/Monastir WhisperToMe (talk) 04:58, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

While going through more articles I found two photos on the Commons that portray the Greek genocide in the 1920s. There is Greek text in the images, but it's also quite upsetting. If you are not interested in captioning these photos, that would be okay. If you are, I can give the URLs for them. WhisperToMe (talk) 23:55, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@WhisperToMe: sure, no problem. Constantine 06:50, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Here are the Greek genocide photos: File:Smyrna-vict-families-1922.jpg, File:Smyrna-massacre greeks-killed line.jpg (I'm trying to figure out whether the description that was posted in Turkish was correct??) and File:Smyrna-vict-elder-child-massacre-1922.jpg. Also there are Greek signs in a postcard of a belltower: File:St.fotini.smyrna.bell.jpg WhisperToMe (talk) 12:15, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi WhisperToMe, done, as far as I am able to read the inscriptions. No, the Turkish description is the exact opposite, of course. Commons is even less patrolled for nationalist POV-pushing than regular Wikipedia, and any user can practically upload and add whatever one wishes, as long as there is no copyright infringement. If you start delving into Balkan/Middle Eastern topics, you will see lots of this, unfortunately. Constantine 12:31, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I also noticed the Turkish description started in this edit: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Smyrna-massacre_greeks-killed_line.jpg&diff=239652209&oldid=71336617 // Until that point there was no Turkish description. WhisperToMe (talk) 12:36, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that Turkish user is also responsible, as I see now, for moving Category:Great Fire of Smyrna to Category:Great Fire of Izmir. Such edits are rather typical of a certain type of POV-pusher (e.g. moving Adrianople to Edirne, Constantinople to Istanbul, etc. even when the common name at the time of an event was other). Many Turks have some deep-seated insecurities in such matters (of course, they are not alone in that, I know plenty of Greeks who refuse to acknowledge that "Greek coffee" is "Turkish coffee").... Constantine 12:40, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I cut out the nationality descriptions from the tr sentence (as the photo simply isn't labeled as such) and will seek to have the Turkish sentence retouched.
Interestingly enough I noticed something about the films The Promise and The Ottoman Lieutenant, the former a film about the Armenian genocide funded by an Armenian film businessman and the latter a Turkish-produced film that was released around the same time as The Promise (to the point where when The Promise changed its release date, The Ottoman Lieutenant did as well). The characters in the former call the Ottoman capital "Constantinople" as it was known in the West at the time (apparently "Stamboul" was the name for the urban core in western languages) while in the latter characters call the city Istanbul. The postcards I read on the Commons show that Constantinople was the French/Western name at the time.
WhisperToMe (talk) 12:57, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That is not entirely incorrect: in Turkish, the name has been Istanbul since the 15th century, although officially it remained also Konstantiniyye until the 1920s. Same for the other cities. So in a Turkish-language movie, this use is entirely expected and proper. However, where our Turkish friends step over into POV/nationalist territory is when they try to impose these names on Western, historical names from before the 1930s, when the Turkish names were adopted internationally. Because the Western names usually derive from the Byzantine/Greek past of these cities, I know, from my interactions with them, that they interpret every attempt to change them as a covert challenge on the "Turkishness" of these cities (especially if it comes from a Greek like myself).
I have Turkish friends who find this as ridiculous as I do, but they are rather a (vanishingly small) minority, especially in Erdogan's Turkey. This is the same people who almost 600 years later, still celebrates the conquest of Constantinople with big spectacles, while insisting that it will "never become Constantinople again". It does show, as I said, the insecurities embedded in their national psyche during the collapse/partition of the Ottoman Empire. Constantine 13:11, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I see! The Ottoman Lieutenant was an English-language movie (The Promise was also in English) and it had an American character say she wanted to go to Istanbul. WhisperToMe (talk) 13:15, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If it was produced with money from the Turkish government (or people with ties to it), I am not surprised; they probably had it in the contract somewhere that they had to avoid using the word "Constantinople" ;). And I remember reading about the movie that it was very much a denialist portrayal of the Armenian genocide, which checks the same boxes. Constantine 13:22, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yep... it was produced with money from Turkey. It was edited-post production and the director, apparently frustrated with those changes, did no promotion for the film. WhisperToMe (talk) 13:27, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

BTW I'm still looking for someone who could transcribe Ottoman Turkish text in its original form so we could actually see the typed text and plug it into an online dictionary or something. I've asked on trwiki's village pump and people gave romanized Turkish text, which is also very useful (having modern Turkish text is great!), yet the original Perso-Arabic script would be great too under the language header "ota". WhisperToMe (talk) 13:35, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. I can read Arabic and sort of read the Ottoman script as well, but not well enough, unfortunately. Constantine 13:39, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you're interested in making more Greek transcription annotations, I found a neato 1911 Ottoman calendar at File:1911 Ottoman Calendar.jpg (these calendars are what got me interested in the topic, seeing how multilingual the empire was!). There's also one at File:Calendar Thessaloniki 1896.jpg but there may be readability issues WhisperToMe (talk) 04:25, 20 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Question about forced march photo[edit]

Hi! At Commons:Village_pump#Identity_of_the_marchers_in_this_photograph I am trying to find the identity of this photo. it's often associated with the Armenian genocide but s User edited the file and said it was the Greek genocide...

| 23:30, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Roman Empire ca 400 AD[edit]

Hi Cplakidas,

I want to make a map for the game warzone.net (a risk game). You can create maps yourself as player with Inkscape. I really wanted to make a late Roman Map, because they have a lot more provinces than the beginning of the republic/empire. I can't any find any good maps besides this one (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Roman_Empire_ca_400_AD.png), so my question is if i can use this map for this game and if you agree with it if can receive the SVG file of this map?

I hope to hear from you and thank you in advance!

Aron The Netherlands — Preceding unsigned comment added by AronNijman (talk • contribs) 21:43, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Aron, yes, of course, no problem. I've just now uploaded the SVG version. It is under a CC-BY-SA license, so as long as any derivatives are attributed, no objections from me, only one request: should you find any errors, please contact me so that I can correct them in the original. Other than that, have fun with it! Constantine 22:07, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! I will do a lot of research, this map is just the base, so i will contact you if there are any errors in the map! — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2A02:A210:2300:BE80:4476:1F80:B814:44D4 (talk) 22:19, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A question[edit]

Hello, I find there is a city in this map you uploaded named "loppe"(at the west coast of Palaestina I), I searched a lot of references but didn't find such a name, and I think it might be Yafa. File:Assassination of George I of Greece, 1913.png[edit]

Hi, Cplakidas. An image you uploaded in 2011, File:Assassination of George I of Greece, 1913.png, is being used in an article at English Wikipedia, w:Alexandros Schinas, and I'm trying to find the author, publisher, and original publication date for the lithograph. (There's a similar image uploaded by someone else at File:Alekos Schinas Killing2.jpg.) I'm having trouble reading the fine print on the very bottom line of the inscription on the picture. I was wondering if you scanned this yourself, and if you might know or be able to read it better in the source book, the identity of the author, publisher, and what the original publication date was for the lithograph? If you didn't scan it yourself, do you happen to remember where you found it? Thanks in advance for any info you might be able to provide! Cheers, Levivich (talk) 21:42, 18 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Levivich, I really don't remember where I got it from. I've uploaded a few of these lithographs, variously from the internet, a publication on lithographs on Greece and the Balkan Wars that I found in my uncle's office, and other books. The author is indicated in the description, it is Karl Haupt, you can see his signature in the lower left corner. The publisher was the bookshop of Drakos Papadimitriou (lower right corner), and the date must have been 1913, lithographs were always about contemporary events. Constantine 05:58, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thank you for the information, and for uploading the image! Levivich (talk) 16:34, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How did you know it was Haupt? I see a partial signature in the bottom-left corner but it doesn't appear to have those letters. It looks like the author changed a few times in the file's edit history. And just to check, the description says it came from a book of lithographs—do you have even some guesses at which books it might have been? We're trying to track down original publication info to confirm the copyright. czar 12:54, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The signature has exactly these letters, actually, in calligraphic writing. On the book, I really can't remember its title. Something with Greek lithographs of the Balkan Wars, I think, possibly an edition of the National Bank of Greece IIRC. Constantine 17:32, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pareuphratidai Poleis[edit]

Hello, I'm translating this map (File:Byzantine Empire Themes 1025-en.svg) to Chinese but the "Pareuphratidai Poleis" really made me confused, I have no idea at all and couldn't find useful search results in book database and Google. Is there a more general name which could help me to search, or can you offer me some materials? Thanks a lot. -- Vikarna 02:04, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Vikarna: the translation would be "Euphrates Cities" (literally "Cities Along the Euphrates"). Constantine 17:30, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to see you again. Someone told me it might means par(para, along)-euphratidai poleis(polis), and what you say confirms it. Thanks a lot. -- Vikarna 00:42, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

History split[edit]

Hello. Could you request a history split for File:Byzantine imperial flag, 14th century, square.svg and File:Byzantine imperial flag, 14th century.svg, as the new versions you have uploaded are significantly from the previous ones? Veverve (talk) 15:57, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Veverve. I am unfamiliar with this, but from looking at the description, I don't see how this applies here. The new versions are corrected representations of the topic (Byzantine imperial flags in the 14th century), so I don't understand why a new file needs to be created. Certainly for File:Byzantine imperial flag, 14th century.svg, as its original creator, I am perfectly happy to have it as it is, and given the heavy usage of both flags in Wikipedia projects, I don't think that moving the 'new' versions into new files would be a good idea. Constantine 17:33, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I believe those changes are important enough to require splitting them into two. You can put the old versions you consider faulty as new files and keep the new ones in the original file name.
The faulty ones are, if I understand correctly, still of historical importance as they represent Byzantine flags as reproduced by the West (i.e. in an improper way). On the other hand, the newest ones are reconstructions based not on actual datas from that time period, but on educated guesswork to try to be as close as possible to reality. Therefore, since those two sets of images are of a different topic, I think they should be split. Veverve (talk) 19:03, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite. The former versions are 'reconstructions' too, in the sense that the highly stylized Betas used there are not really attested in either Byzantine or Western contemporary designs. Both flags were intended to represent the actual flags in use at the time, not Western reproductions (which, again, they are not). Western reproductions from that period are actually much closer to the 'new' designs than the previous ones. The matter is simple: the original creator of the square flag (en:User:Dragases) had used the stylized versions because these were then the only ones available, being already present in a number of similar flags floating around the internet (if memory serves, the flag was based on a Flags of the World prototype). When I made the tailed banner, I, somewhat lazily, relied on that, without redrawing the shapes to accord more to the original depictions. The recent edits are merely long-overdue corrections to these designs, and do not affect their purpose or topic. Constantine 19:16, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Byzantine flags[edit]

Hello.
I took a look at http://www.euraldic.com/lasu/bl/bl_p_al.html, and it says the Palaiologos dynasty emblem has "quatre B" ("four B"), so File:Palaiologos dynasty flag.svg is wrong even in its reliance on euraldic.com.
Also, I have added all the derivative flags of File:Palaiologos dynasty flag.svg I could find to the "Other versions" of File:Palaiologos dynasty flag.svg. I guess you could try to fix them. However, somehow, the design of File:Flag of PalaeologusEmperor.svg is found in this 2003 document on p. 9. Veverve (talk) 15:03, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any plan on what to do with those inaccurate flags? Veverve (talk) 09:51, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Veverve, I plan to fix the problematic flags ASAP, in so far as they can legitimately be said to be simply distorted versions of the actual flag. File:Byzantine Navy flag.svg for example is not, since there is no documented use of this design in this form. In other words, I will not touch the flags in Category:Fictional or conjectural flags of the Byzantine Empire, because most of these designs are simply invented. Constantine 14:24, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Good. I took the liberty of correcting File:Byzantine Navy flag.svg myself since you said you would not do it. Veverve (talk) 17:48, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

File:Stemma del marchesato del Monferrato.svg uses File:Testone Guglielmo II Paleologo.jpg as model, but File:Stemma del marchesato del Monferrato.svg still has some strange firesteels instead of rounded Bs like its model does. While you are at it, you could fix this also maybe. Veverve (talk) 00:57, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Moreover, File:Briquet.png and File:Blason famille it Gonzaga08.svg both use those firesteels. Since they have no sources, I will ask for a speedy deletion for those two.
@Ichthyovenator: hello! I am pinging you because File:Quintini-Paleologo.png and File:Paleologo-Oriundi.png would also need to be corrected; your first source is File:Stemma del marchesato del Monferrato.svg (see above for why it is faulty), and the second uses Bs and not firesteels. I fail to see how your third source, used only for File:Paleologo-Oriundi.png, justifies the current design. Veverve (talk) 01:11, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Veverve: the firesteels in the later Western arms are quite correct; the Bs were interpreted this way early on (the term is used even in a Byzantine source, and the Serbian cross, which is obviously derived from it and has 'open' letters similar to a C or crescent, is attested already in the late 14th century) and the arms should remain as they are, as they represent the final shape of the design. You corrected the Bs of File:Flag of PalaeologusEmperor.svg, but by doing so the image does not represent the flag with corrupted Bs which can be found in the Conoscimento de todos los Reinos. This means the current version is no a SVG versio of a historical representation, but an origina work. Therefore, I feel the image should be reverted back to its 12:52, 22 March 2020 version. Theme of Dyrrhachium[edit]

Hello, which source did you use for the theme of Dyrrhachium in your Byzantine map [13]? Because there is this new book of Tom Winnifrith who depicts the theme differently [14]. Ahmet Q. (talk) 11:57, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ahmet Q.. It mostly derives from the sources used in the equivalent article. There were no clear boundaries of the theme, and especially during the 10th century, during the wars with the Bulgarians, Byzantine authority encompassed mostly the coast. The boundaries shown on the map are indicative. Constantine 19:50, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Alright thanks for the info, but now that I look back at Tom's new map it seems like there is an error: Vlora is wrongly positioned on the map so I am not sure what he really wanted to depict in the south. But could you expand the theme of Dyrrachium in your map to include more of Northern Albania like Tom did? I do think that the northern part of his map is still correct imo. Ahmet Q. (talk) 19:00, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Cplakidasare you going to implement it on your map? If not, I am going to make my own version, so I would like to know. Ahmet Q. (talk) 08:08, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Byzantine emperors[edit]

@Cplakidas: Hi! I've categorized Byzantine emperors also under Roman emperors because Wikipedia lists also Byzantine emperors under Roman emperors. And, for many (myself as well), they're considered "Eastern Roman". They never called themselves "Byzantines". I know my opinion isn't important, but, if it was, I would merge the category of the Byzantine emperors with the Roman ones. Greetings, Mhmrodrigues (talk) 16:41, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Mhmrodrigues: I sort of agree, but just as on Wikipedia, for categorization we follow historiographic and common name conventions, and in both cases, the 'Byzantine' emperors exist and the term is more common for the post-395 emperors than 'Roman' emperors plain and simple. Two mixed mausoleums[edit]

Hi Cplakidas, I see you opened en:Gharib Mirza and improved en:Al-Mustansir Billah II (Nizari imam), but there's one little issue: the uploader of both photos obviously confused two places, so recently I renamed files and opened these two, based on references:

Therefore I suggest you to replace photos in two en.wiki articles. Greetings, --Orijentolog (talk) 22:48, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for the correction, Orijentolog, will fix it right away! Constantine 07:25, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. English Wiki also have another confusion related to birthplace of en:Aga Khan I, it's not en:Kahak, Qom but en:Kahak, Delijan. Articles containing this mistake are: en:Aga Khan I, en:Kahak, en:Kahak, Qom, en:Shah Khalil Allah III, en:History of Nizari Isma'ilism, and en:List of Isma'ili imams.
Sources: this article says "Kahak near Maḥallāt" and Kahak, Delijan is the closest one to Mahallat, among other Kahaks. Another Iranica's article gives coords 34°10′53″ N, long 50°19′60″ E which again fits for Kahak, Delijan, and article also describes a caravanserai which you can see on the Google maps (north), along with Ismaili castle (west). And the best source: I've passed there so ignore sources and just trust me (LOL). :) --Orijentolog (talk) 13:35, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, Orijentolog, will fix this. Glad to see someone else also tackling this rather obscure (and astonishingly error-laden) topic on WP. Constantine 13:38, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
PS, Daftary also writes (The Isma'ilis, 2nd Edition, p. 456) "Kahak, a village situated about thirty-five kilometres northeast of Anjudān and northwest of Mahallāt". Constantine 13:45, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, and again fits perfectly for Kahak, Delijan, I just checked it on map. --Orijentolog (talk) 14:11, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Orijentolog: I just added some info to the relevant article: en:Kahak, Delijan. Will hopefully get around to fleshing out a bit more from the Iranica article when writing the articles of the respective imams who resided there. Constantine 14:13, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks. :) If you need any help in future, feel free to contact me here on Commons. Also if I notice some serious topic-related mistakes I'll inform you. FYI I'm mostly active here on Commons and Wikidata, working on architectural (and geographic) identification and categorization, till now several thousand of buildings are properly organized by location, function, dynastic period, year, century, etc. And all that periodization is done strictly, with URL references inside Wikidata (encyclopedias, scholarly works and so on). Wikipedias are awful regarding to it (probably some 20-30% articles!); bad and ambiguous naming, wrong periods or converted dates, ancient-mania (claims of older origin)... but I don't plan to bother you with it here. --Orijentolog (talk) 16:06, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Abassid coins[edit]

Liebe Cplakidas. Was möchten Sie tun?

Category:Kings of Prussia, Category:Emperors of Russia, Category:Monarchs of Austria, Category:Monarchs of France oder Category:Sultans of the Ottoman Empire um mal einige der prominentesten zu nehmen.

Last change in Map_of_the_southern_Balkans%2C_1410.svg [[15]][edit]

Hello Constantine, hope you are good. I have some objection on your last edition of the map, especially the Zenebishi region never expanded too south and towns such as Paramythia never came under his control (I don't know why Pogoni was also painted yellow, there is no evidence that it belonged to Zenebishi). Why the former white areas around Thesprotia, Pogoni become Zenebishi's? The border was so unstable and fragile those years I believe that we should return to the previous version. Alexikoua (talk) 22:30, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alexikoua! I'll gladly make corrections, can you please give me a) the specific changes (which settlements were controlled by whom) and b) sources for them? The white areas were a bit problematic, and I intend to indicate unclear control by blurring the colors on the borders, but haven't found time for it yet.
