PD-South-Africa-exempt

Hi Htonl, you're the creator of {{PD-South-Africa-exempt}}, and the wording of this is an issue in relation to Commons:Deletion requests/File:SA-Army-badge.png (the deletion is being challenged, as discussed at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#User:Fastily). I must say that it isn't obvious to me, from the wording of the act, that it applies to images within official documents in this way. Do you have any supporting evidence for this interpretation? Or is this perhaps just a usual way of interpreting such things (forgive me, I'm not much good with the intricacies of copyright law)? Thanks, Rd232 (talk) 00:52, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

I've commented on the undeletion request. I've used the license tag for scans of acts of Parliament and court judgments, which are indisputably covered by the wording, but heraldic registrations are a very borderline case, I agree. Hi,

I reverted your changes to File:World homosexuality laws.svg. The way you used the stylesheet to set the colors prevented them from showing up at full size: The img looks fine when reduced, but when displayed at full size, the colors of the states of the US, Mexico, etc. did not show up. Yes, it was, but I see basically the same thing w IE. But it's weird: If I'm coming from WP-en, your first edit is messed up, but your 2nd is OK. But if I link from Commons, then both are messed up. In FF, both are messed up from both locales. Kwamikagami (talk) 11:41, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

You might want to check out File:Asia homosexuality laws.svg. There are several discrepancies; I notice UAE, Burma, Sri Lanka, Aceh, Sulawesi, Singapore, Brunei do not match the world map. Kwamikagami (talk) 03:51, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Bonaire wasn't meant to be there, but it wasn't related to Mexico DF. Bonaire got the dark blue colour because it is now part of the Netherlands, since the Netherlands Antilles were dissolved - but as far as I can tell it still has a separate Civil Code which doesn't allow for SSM. Hi, the description on this map says 'A map of civilizations, based on Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations".' but it seems like a lot of edits made into this map are based on the editors' respective opinions and not according to this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Clash_of_Civilizations#Major_civilizations_according_to_Huntington, which I think is more of a reliable citation than the opinions of the people who edited the map. For example, in the map shown at the Wikipedia link I provided, it shows that the Philippines is a crossroad of Sinic, Western, and Islamic civilizations though in the map at Civilizations_map.png, it shows that the Philippines is a Latin American civilization, a thing that is not seen in Huntington's book nor can be seen when one goes inside the Philippines. It's not only the Philippines that I'm concerned of but as well as the other countries such as Nigeria (Islamic and African) and the others. Can you please fix this? Coordinates for maps

Do you have the edge / corner coordinates for the maps you created? If the source image contains the info, a link to that would also help. I'm trying to overlay the map on Google Earth (To see which areas have high density) and it would make alignment significantly easier. Specifically this one: File:Gauteng_2001_population_density_map.svg MoHaG (talk) 06:53, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

The map is an Albers projection, so the edges don't exactly follow straight lines of latitude and longitude; on the scale of that map it's probably a small difference, though. For that Gauteng map, the lower left corner is about 27.01 S 27.04 E and the upper right corner is about 25.03 S 29.22 E. Thanks, that seem to work! A standard way of geotagging maps might be quite useful... Channel islands map

I wonder if your edit to Channel Islands location map.svg slightly affected the placing of objects on the map. In the article 2007 Alderney UFO sighting an airport now appears over the sea. JMK (talk) 19:23, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

I don't see how it possibly could, because my edit only changed the parameters of the {{OpenStreetMap}} template in a way which doesn't even affect the output. But to test, I've reverted the edit, and the airport still appears in the same place. The coordinates used in the article are correct, so I suspect there is a problem with w:en:Template:Location map Channel Islands or with the image itself. - Htonl (talk) 20:58, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Possibly something to do with en:Template:Location map many? Compare 2007 Alderney UFO sighting with Alderney Airport - on the latter, the marker doesn't seem to be so far off the island, although it's still a bit off. - Htonl (talk) 21:19, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

In fact, I've looked at some other uses of en:Template:Location map and its related templates - ones with maps that I haven't edited at all - and a lot of them seem to have the marker displaced downwards from where it should be. South African election maps

Hi there

I noticed you're behind those great 2009 GE maps for south africa, which show the results by ward or the % vote for the parties by ward. I've been working on the 2011 LGE results by ward, but I'd love to get the 2009 GE results by ward, but the IEC only reports the 2009 results by province, municipality or the way too micro voting districts. Any way I could get my hand on the data you used to create those 2009 election maps by ward? Or at least a way to access some fairly micro results for 2009 without going down to precinct level? I'm particularly interested in Port Elizabeth results.

I calculated the results per ward from the per-precinct spreadsheet - I wrote a program to do it, but it can actually be done with ordinary spreadsheet software. Anyway, you can download the per-ward results here. - Htonl (talk) 20:14, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Just wondering about any boundary changes there might have been to the wards themselves between 2009 and the 2011 LGE. I have the maps for the wards used in 2011, do these 2009 results correspond to the 2011 wards or to some older boundaries? The 2009 national results correspond to the boundaries used for the 2006 municipal elections (except for some changes to municipal codes, and the transfer of Merafong City from NW to Gauteng, but the actual ward boundaries didn't change). We have editable blank maps here: File:South Africa electoral wards 2009 blank.svg, File:South Africa municipalities 2009 blank.svg and File:South Africa districts 2009 blank.svg. Photos

You offer to take photos in Cape Town. There are a few road signs around Cape Town since March 2011 to warn of Leopard Toad crossings. These are in Tokai road, Silvermine Road, Dryersdal, Midwood and Roscommon roads. If you can get a photo of any of these at some point, it may be useful to the Leopard Toad article. Anglican Communion map

This map shows Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, Haiti and the Dominican Republic as grey. They are all under the jurisdiction of the Episcopal Church, USA, in the same manner as Taiwan, though Taiwan is blue. Someone needs to fix that. Hello. Are your home language maps based on primary home language or on ability to speak a language at home? My [limited] searches of the census data yielded only statistics about primary home language and not about ability to speak a language, so I'm not sure if such data exists. -- 86.85.78.174 13:43, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Map - Bantustans in South Africa.svg

This map (Bantustans in South Africa.svg) that you have created is excellent, as the level of detail appears to have been painstaking. I appreciate the effort you put into making it. Other maps only show approximations of boundaries, or very old and out-of-date proposed boundaries. I have been looking for a map on Wikipedia that shows the actual boundaries for the four nominally independent homelands as they existed at independence and during their existence. For the other homelands, that would also be a bonus.

So my question is, is this that map that I have been looking for? That is, are the boundaries shown the actual real-life boundaries that were in effect during the existence of the homelands? Jeff in CA (talk) 20:40, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Please bear in mind that "Bantustans" are a derogatory propaganda term and not the formally correct name for the item in question. The boundaries changed over time. And the homelands are actually still in existence. Just not called it that way, but semi-officially they exist with parallel structures for state government and traditional leaders. --105.4.1.29 06:08, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

That map is a best-effort attempt to reflect the actual boundaries. Currently it is based on boundary data from the National Department of Agriculture's AGIS system. I have since discovered that Africa Open Data has another boundary data file from the Directorate of Public State Land Support in the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform. They are, I believe, the authoritative source for this data. I intend quite soon to redraw the maps based on this data; there are some noticeable changes particularly to KwaZulu.

You should be aware, though, that homeland borders changed quite frequently, as land was transferred in and out of the homelands. Even the TBVC states' borders changed quite a bit after nominal independence as more land was transferred to them. My map intends to be a reflection of the situation on 26 April 1994 (the day before the homelands were dissolved). - Htonl (talk) 10:33, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Pardon my very amateur wikipedia use. I am an art history author working on Zulu ceramics and require a Bantustan map in a vector format for an internal figure in a publication. From what I can find yours is the best quality I can find with the correct format in the public domain. Am I correct in my reading that use in internal illustrations would be fair use for you? This would be in an academic monograph.

The license on the image is Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 which means you are free to copy and redistribute the image, as long as you give credit (attribution). You could attribute it as "Map of homelands in South Africa by Adrian Frith is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0" or, if your space is limited, "Map by Adrian Frith / CC BY-SA 3.0". Replicating your road maps

I'm currently working on Ghana's numbered highway system, but I'm not sure how to include a map of the network. I came across the maps you created for South Africa's national roads system, which is a perfect model for what I had in mind for my project. The map has still not been updated, because the section from Marlboro to Park Station still appear as under construction in dashes. They were all completed and opened to service back in 2012. Four Wikipedia articles are using this map. Can you rectify it please?

Update request for File:Metrication by year map.svg

Hello.

In File:Metrication by year map.svg can you color the ex-Soviet states the same color as Russia, because the metric system was introduced by a decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the RSFSR (which included the current ex-Soviet states except Moldova and Baltic states) on Sept. 14, 1918? The RSFSR was renamed the USSR in 1923 and the RSFSR became one of its members as a Union Republic. It was made mandatory for the USSR by a resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR on July 21, 1925. And on April 16, 1927 other systems of measurements were prohibited for parallel usage, and the metric system became the sole system of measurement. When the metric reform in the USSR was completed, the Commission was abolished by the Decree of the Council of People's Commissars on March 15, 1928

Hello.

Can you update Turkey and Greenland in File:Metrication by year map.svg? Turkey was colored in the previous edition, but has been colored white in the last edition. The metric system was introduced to Turkey in the 1920s and Greenland became metric the same time as Denmark, thus it needs to be colored in the same color.

P.S.:Can you also update File:World metrication.svg and File:SI-metrication-world.png as well?

Can you add South Sudan and colored in blue as part of the Anglican Communion in File:Anglican C., Porvoo C., Utrecht Union.svg which you last updated?

I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files on 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 630 maps, but there is a long way to go.

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself, that is why I asked you.

Can you update File:World metrication.svg where numerous countries are left as uncategorized and blank, and possibly more corrections are needed for countries that are already colored, but incorrectly?

File:Metrication by year map.svg which is complete, can be used to complete File:World metrication.svg.

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Coloring municipalities in maps with Inkscape?

Thanks for all the amazing maps.

Do you know if it's possible to select municipalities of File:Blank map of the Western Cape (2016).svg with Inkscape? I'd like to color several of the municipalities, like is possible with File:SA provinces.svg. -- Jeandré, 2020-04-01t14:58z

@Jeandré du Toit: if you want to colour in municipalities the file you want is File:Map of the Western Cape with municipalities blank (2016).svg. It has layers named "dist" and "muni" containing individual polygons for each district and local municipality respectively. They are not filled by default, so you would need to first find them in the XML Editor (assuming you are using Inkscape) and set a fill style on them. - Htonl (talk) 14:27, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

Request - Southern African relief map

Hi, I am currently improving the file Shaka's_Empire_map.svg. The background is derived from the file South Africa relief location map.svg, a map you uploaded. This is great, but the Mfecane affected an area greater that shown by the map. Could you possibly make a relief map of the whole of Southern Africa ? A map of the whole of Africa already exists (South Africa relief location map.svg), but it's resolution isn't high enough.

Police precinct maps

Cape Town Metropolitan Road Markings

Hi, I saw that you have added most of South Africa’s road signs on all National, Regional as-well as Metropolitan signs for Johannesburg, Cape Town and other Metropolitan Road markings. I noticed that for Cape Towns Metropolitan routes, it stopes at the “M13 Sign”, I was wondering if you could finish them, or tell and teach me how you create them. @Wickey: ah, no, look at the border of Natal and the Cape Province, adjacent to Lesotho. The border is different there - that's what changed in 1976. - Htonl (talk) 12:38, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Okay. Then, a small explanation in the description would be very helpful, as it is a minimal change. Even better, the old boundary added in the latter one (e.g. with a red dashed line). I have added some notes in the descriptions of my maps. Yes the map you link has many problems, of which the southern Natal border is one. (Others include: the northern border of Natal - the Utrecht and Vryheid areas were not part of Natal until 1902; the fact that it is labeled "Natalia" when the Natalia Republic was taken over by the British in 1843 and became the Colony of Natal; the boundaries in the Cape Colony/Griqualand West/Stellaland/Bechuanaland area which are an anachronistic mix of 1880s and 1890s boundaries.) - Htonl (talk) 15:11, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Well done. I was looking for a map of the republics just before 1910. File:Boer republics nl.svg is used by several wiki's. Possibly the same source and same problems. Probably, File:SouthAfrica1885.svg is the best alternative. --Wickey (talk) 11:41, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

File:SouthAfrica1885.svg is pretty good. Only issue I can spot is that Griqualand East is depicted as larger than it should be - some of it should rather be marked as Pondoland, which maintained a level of independence from the British until the 1890s. - Htonl (talk) 11:50, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello @Htonl: , with File:Map of South Africa with English labels.svg and File:Map of South Africa with English labels.svg you have really created two masterpieces that are very much in demand and have found use in very many Wikipedia language versions. But unfortunately they are no longer up to date. It is now more than three years ago that the small country "Swaziland" changed its name to "Eswatini". Commons, Wikiqote and the majority of Wikipedia language versions, especially almost all big and important ones have moved their articles to "Eswatini" in the meantime. So it wouldn't be a bad idea to update your map masterpieces as well.--Bestoernesto (talk) 05:18, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Source for 1994 Election map

Hello, I ve found this http://electionresources.org/za/1994/provinces/index.html as the source for the district data, and ought to match the data with the district map according to this site: http://www.maphill.com/south-africa/, which went well for most cases, though there were some mismatches in Limpopo and KZN

General: Waterberg & Gauteng

There appears to be much confusion about the extent of the Waterberg in Limpopo, South Africa, and the sections thereof that are known as the Waterberg plateau and the Waterberg Biosphere respectively. Basically: Waterberg > Waterberg plateau > Waterberg Biosphere. Some very informative maps are found on this webpage [2]. In case you are able to prepare any map whatsoever to separate these, it would be of great help.
Secondly a conundrum that I am not able to solve with maps: south of Pretoria there is a suburb named Irene Glen Private Estate. It doesn't appear to be part of Pretoria or Centurion, but does seem to be in City of Tshwane. In case you can work out to which main place in Tshwane it belongs to, that would be very useful.
