Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Your most recent change to the description of this file,

"English: Plant at Elvina Bay, Australia delete this file, incorrect identification"

confuses me. What is that you want to happen with this image and why?

If the problem is the name of the file -- if it is not an Orange Bush from Elvina Bay, you can put {{rename|newname|reason}} at the top of the file's text and an administrator will rename it to whatever you like. Or tell me, below, what you want to happen, and I'll see if it can be done.

File information[edit]

Hi Poyt448, I noticed you filled the "Permission" and "Other versions" fields with texts like "No", "OK", "Yes" etc. I'd like to ask you not to do that as this doesn't do anything but create unneeded fields in display. Only fill in fields if there is information for them. For example, if somebody else (or you) makes a different version of a file, you can link to it from Other_versions and it'll appear on the File-page. And when the field is empty it won't appear on the File-page as it's not needed. But if it's filled with "no", the field is forced to display because there is a value. See an example here. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Gmelina leaves forest floor[edit]

Hi, I put your photo of Gmelina leaves on the forest floor in the Wikipedia article on plant litter, w:Litterfall. I shortened the caption a bit to just say the photo is from Barrington Tops National Park. I hope that's okay.--Brambleshire (talk) 03:38, 29 April 2012 (UTC) Thank you for using the photo. It's a fine article indeed. White Beech is a fairly uncommon to rare species, one of the best ways to identify it is the fallen leaves. Hi, Re File:Powerful Owl - April 6 2009 Chatswood West edited..JPG | This is an interesting photograph. Can you confirm that it was taken at night or not. Please add this detail to the image description on Commons to explain the photograph better. It would be interesting to know what time of day it was photographed. Did you use flash photography? or is there another reason to explain the light reflection from the owl's eyes? How did you identify the owl in the dark? Dear Snowmanradio,

Thank you for looking at the owl picture. The picture was taken at night, with a flash on a tripod. The owl is easily identified because of the large size, (Australia's largest owl species), and the distinctive high pitched "HOO HOO" double call of the same note. The photo was taken at 22:23 in the evening. The call is so loud, that it got me out of bed. And is subsequently the owl has woken me from sleep when they call from the TV aerial above. I wasn't sure if this photo was suitable for Wikipedia, and thought it would be deleted. Glad you like it.

Hi,

I requested assistance from Commons to include the correct tags for the public domain status of this file. The reply does not help. The original website for the file is included in the text.

There are many of Margaret Flockton's drawings on Commons, such as this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmelina_leichhardtii#/media/File:Gmelina_leichhardtii00.jpg

They are all fine in a legal sense. As should this image, if correctly tagged.

This image is a candidate for a new "Did You Know"

As I mentioned before, please advise the correct tabs. Surely it should be easy for a Commons expert to copy the correct ones across.

Lomatia fraseri[edit]

Hello Poyt448,

I think your image labelled Lomatia fraseri is of the leaves of Lomatia myricoides. The leaves of L. fraseri are roughly 4x as long as wide - those of L. myricoides more like 10x as long as wide. I think you will agree that the leaves in your photo are very much like those on the Wikipedia page about L. myricoides. L. fraseri does not occur in the Brisbane Waters area, however L. myricoides is common there. (The distributions are mapped on the RBGS pages - L. fraseri here and L. myricoides here.) I suspect Casliber's image from Joseph Banks Nature Reserve is of a cultivated specimen. I hope you will not mind if I replace your image on the Wikipedia page. Hi Peter, I have been looking at your photo of a Philotheca hispidula. I notice that a subtitle included 'Philotheca buxifolia ssp obovata?'. I took this to mean that there was a question over the correct identification? I have taken a photo of a P. (Central Coast) that looks exactly like your plant (Kuring Gai) which is different to all the other photos I have seen of both P.Hispidula and ssp obovata. Image: Backhousia_tetraptera_new_growth.jpg[edit]

Hi Poyt448, I'm wondering if you can confirm the GPS data for this file. The reason I ask is that the species Backousia tetraptera is endemic to north Queensland and if the GPS coordinates are correct then it is probably a different species in Backhousia. Hi - I was correcting the article Endiandra in fr wiki and I noticed that the label of the file Endiandra sieberi Wyrabbalong National Park4.jpg has an error : Wyrrabalong has two R and a single B and not the opposite (see Wyrrabalong National Park in enwiki). I don't know how to do to correct in wikimedia commons. Could you correct it ?
