Zoomify image[edit]

Can it be possible to extract the larger version of File:William Ewart Lockhart, Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee Service, Westminster Abbey, 21 June 1887 (1887–1890).jpg from this site? One probelm is that when you zoom in to the highest there are gray patches that don't show up. KAVEBEAR (talk) 06:25, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done. You were right, the gray patches were indeed corrupt. I managed to fix them somewhat with a bit less detailed version of the image. —Quibik (talk) 01:43, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for your help!--KAVEBEAR (talk) 12:33, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Would you happen to know which tool is used to zoom the following link: http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org%20download%20full%20size%20image/ Thanks

Can you upload this image [1]? Thank you.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 06:09, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done: File:Samoan family c 1909.jpg. –Quibik (talk) 23:00, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Do you understand why I can't change the image size on this article but when you put them in an infobox, you can change the size.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 17:11, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Infoboxes don't use the "thumb" keyword, which does not allow images to be enlarged from their native size. I guess uploading enlarged images justified in this case (use something like GIMP or Paint.NET to do the scaling, if you do). —Quibik (talk) 17:43, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Or, actually, you could use this as a workaround:
{{multiple image
| image1 = Prince Punuarii Teriitapunui.jpg
| width1 = 150
| footer = Prince Teriʻitapunui
}}
Quibik (talk) 17:43, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will do that in the future.
Do you know how to best version of this image or should I just copy my computer screen?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 02:29, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here's what you can get by viewing a single tile in that zoom and fiddling with its parameters: [2]. There is a plan to add this specific type of zooming software (and others) to Dezoomify, too, whenever that might happen. —Quibik (talk) 04:48, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Then again... if you use the "download" function at the top of that image and choose "PDF", the PDF will contain the image at the maximum resolution, which you can extract if you have the right tool(s). Either method will work well enough. —Quibik (talk) 05:00, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Could you do anything about this--KAVEBEAR (talk) 16:44, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Digital watermark in JohnKeats1819 hires.jpg[edit]

I'm not sure why you removed the digital watermark notice from File:JohnKeats1819 hires.jpg.[3] The file definitely contains a Digimarc digital watermark. Kaldari (talk) 00:50, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification. I removed it because I could not find any watermarks upon visual examination, which is the kind of watermark I have come to be expect when {{watermark}} is used. It is indeed, strictly speaking, a watermark but I still would not use the tag in this case as I consider {{watermark}} to be an indication of an image needing cleanup. I don't find Digimarc any more distracting or inappropriate than EXIF metadata, which is accepted on Commons. Do you disagree with my point of view? –Quibik (talk) 02:53, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think you have a reasonable point, but my opinion is different. Digital watermarks can be even more problematic than visual watermarks. Sometimes galleries will use them to search for copies of "their" images and demand licensing fees from reusers. I believe the {{Watermark}} template is appropriate for both types of watermarks. watermark removal[edit]

Hi Quibik. As someone with an interest (more or less) in images with watermarks, I thought I'd point you to this discussion in case you wanted to weigh in. Jbarta (talk) 19:14, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Watermark removal with an external editor[edit]

Hi, can you elaborate on how to remove watermarks from the images using external editor. Vensatry (Ping me) 12:06, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Are you more interested in the watermark removing process or setting up external editing capabilities? For watermark removal I use GIMP with a couple of very useful plugins ( which are listed on user page). As for external editing, the key information for setting it up can be found here: mw:Manual:External editors. I'll gladly elaborate on either of them, just ask. It would be great if you could tell me which operating system you are using, too. —Quibik (talk) 12:15, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I thought I would learn both from you. I work on windows. Vensatry (Ping me) 15:02, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Waiting for your response :) Vensatry (Ping me) 22:52, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you! I will get around to it but probably tomorrow or a day after that, when I have a bit more time to spare. Meanwhile, you can help me focus by answering some questions. Have you used GIMP or Adobe Photoshop (or something similar)? If so, what kind of things have you used them for? What web browser do you use? Do you have any specific images in mind that you would like to clean up perhaps? (You seem to have worked with pictures of Indian people, so maybe Category:Images from FilmiTadka and Category:Files from Bollywood Hungama?) —Quibik (talk) 23:13, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't used GIMP so far. I only have a little knowledge about Photoshop and Photofiltre. I use Google chrome. Yes, I'd like to work on images from "Bollywood Hungama" and "Filmitadka". Vensatry (Ping me) 11:10, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the answers! So, as I promised, some instructions for watermark removal and external editing.

Watermark removal

First, about the software: I would advise using either GIMP or Adobe Photoshop. Each can handle the task well while having their pros and cons. Photoshop comes with some more powerful and easier to use tools out-of-the-box. However, I personally use GIMP (with some important plugins that I have listed on my user page) and find Photoshops capabilities lacking for some specific things I like to do (missing grain extract & grain merge layer modes is a huge issue for me, for example).

The most common and basic tool for watermark removal is "clone" (in GIMP, in Photoshop): mark an area on the image that you want to take content from and then clone the content elswhere using a brush. Other, similar but more powerful (depending on the occasion, though) tools exist too. For example, Heal in GIMP, Spot Healing Brush, Healing Brush and Patch Tool in Photoshop (see this for more details). A new and very powerful tool in Photoshop is the Content Aware Fill. Video examples: using the clone tool, using Content Aware Fill.

I suggest you give any of these tools a try and practice on some image with a simpler watermark from User:Quibik/Files by viewcounts/Images with watermarks, like this.

As I mentioned, "clone" is the most common but is also rather basic. I thought I might as well give you the process I usually use for most watermarks (quite possibly too complicated for you right now, feel free to disregard it):

  1. (I am using GIMP here. Most of this does not have exact Photoshop equivalents, unfortunately.) Using the Select by Colour tool I select the watermarked area in the image. Then Selection→Sharpen and Selection→Grow 1 or 2 px to fully select the watermark. Create a new transparent layer with Layer→New Layer. Fill the selection with white color, Selection→Grow 1px. Now, in the external plugin G'MIC, choose Enhancement→Region inpainting, set the "Input layers..." (on the left side of the window) to "Active & below" and then press "OK" to run it. Deselect all. As a result of all this, the watermark region should now be replaced with content roughly similar to the surrounding areas. Sometimes this (with a little bit of blurring) is all that is needed.
  2. Next, I use the Wavelet decompose plugin and split the image to different scales of wavelets. This has the huge benefit of being able to edit only the high-frequency "grain" of the image without affecting the brightness or color of the area, for example. So, after splitting the image to wavelets I merge any amount of them together that seems appropriate to get the desired range of wavelet scales (frequencies) I want to work with. Then I use the clone tool on that layer just as I usually would. When satisfied, merge the layers back together with either Image→Merge Visible Layers or Image→Flatten image. This can be repeated as many times as seems necessary.
  3. If I want to modify only the color of the watermark area, I do the following. Duplicate the image layer. Desaturate the duplicate layer with "luminosity" mode. Set the duplicate layer's color mode to "grain extract", right click on that layer and choos New From Visible and set the layer mode back to "Normal". Then set the created "Visible" layer's mode to "grain merge". As a result of all this you have split the image to "luminosity" – the lightness-darkness of things – and "chroma" – color. You can now use clone, for example, on the "chroma" layer to fix the colors in the watermark area.

That's it. As I said, this is probably a too much for you to take on at once but with these three steps/techniques and determination you can remove most watermarks quite efficiently and easily!

Now, you said that you would like to do watermark removal on "Bollywood Hungama" and "Filmitadka" images. There was a reason I asked about them specifically since you can use a small "trick" to fix them relatively easily. The main idea is to find an alternative version of the same image that might be watermarked too, but has the watermark in a different part of the image, or a version that is simply smaller and totally watermarkless and then use it to fix the watermarked area. To find these alternative images use Google Image Search, press the camera icon and paste the image's URL there. For example, this is the result for File:Raageshwari Ghagra Choli.jpg. From that page I would use this image. Then (in GIMP) open the (main) watermarked image and copy-paste the smaller version from Google on top of it (use Layers→New Layer to convert it to a normal layer afer pasting). Use Layer→Scale Layer to scale the smaller image to the larger one's size. Now comes the most annoying part: set the top layer's mode to "Difference", open Colors→Levels and play around with the sliders (usually must be done for each color channel separately) until the image looks as black as possible, which means that these two layers match in brightness and color. After that use Eraser or "select" of some sort & delete button to erase everything that does not cover the main image's watermark (make sure the top layer has an alpha channel using Layers→Transparency→Add Alpha Channel. Then Image→Flatten Image and you are done! :)

External editing

I already mentioned where you can find the general instructions for external editing. I'll now give you some more spcific ones.

  1. Download and install XExternalEditor.
  2. Unfortunately Chrome does not have a way to associate specific file types with external programs, so you will have to instead associate .php file extension with the XExternalEditor's executable ("C:\Program Files\XExternalEditor\xexternaleditor.exe" probably) system-wide. If you don't know how to do this, just ask.
  3. After this you should be able to use the "Edit this file using an external application" on the bottom of image description pages to open the image in the default program for that file type on your system.
  4. Edit the image however you like and save it. After that press the "Save" button in the XEE window to upload the image. That's it.

Having said all that, external editing is probably not that important for you right now, though. It is most useful when you are doing a large amount of image editing on wiki. Nevertheless, I suggest you give it a try.

If you have any questions about this (which I have no doubt you have, since I probably could have been clearer in quite a few places), just ask! Cheers, —Quibik (talk) 23:13, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for you detailed explanations :) Vensatry (Ping me) 10:13, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How do you generate this list? – JBarta (talk) 17:09, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

These statistics are derived from July & August 2011 monthly view counts for all pages (that had at least 5 views in a month) on all Wikimedia projects, taken from here. These are the same stats that you see on http://stats.grok.se. July & August is not recent at all, I know, but it's the most recent data available (and compiling this from scratch would mean downloading and processing tens of GB of data for each month...). The "views in articles" value in that list is the sum of view counts of all pages (on all projects) a specific image is being used on at the moment of update; "views on file page" should be obvious; "number of articles" is the total number of articles this file is being used on, across all projects. I use GLAMorous to get a list of articles where the files are being used. The updating itself is done automatically, using a program, of course, which I run about once a week.
I don't think that my method of doing all this is quite optimal, though, which is why I have not advertised these lists on the GL too much. I would very much prefer to see something like this as a toolserver tool instead. I have considered (for quite a while by now) contacting and asking Magnus Manske to perhaps code something like that. His GLAMorous and BaGLAMa are already pretty close to what I am doing. —Quibik (talk) 18:51, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. I had a general notion of where they might have come from, but wasn't sure. I just wanted to rule out something simple that even I might be able to update easily. The list certainly is a useful way to sift through tons of images and try to get the most bang for the editing buck. Thanks again for the explanation and thanks for the list . – JBarta (talk) 20:13, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FFT[edit]

I have just a short question: Do you remove patterns only with the gimp plug-in? It's very interesting, because i try to keep as much details with the FFT Plug-Ins for Photoshop, without much handwork on it (but photoshop fails me often). So the results as long weren't very satisfying for me, but alsways better than the version before.

Thanks for you answer and and tme :-) --Grunpfnul (talk) 16:02, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I always use GIMP for my image editing. You can probably get quite a bit done in Photoshop too, but I find 2 significant things to be missing in Photoshop that I simply can't do FFT cleaning (or watermark removal, etc) without. The first ones are grain extract/merge layer blending mode, which is essentially addition/subtraction operation that preserves negative values. The second one, wavelet decompose plugin, is a huge help in doing FFT (and many other editing tasks as well). With it you can basically split the image to different frequency components and work on any desired range of frequencies. This has two significant benefits: you get rid of the horizontal and vertical line in the center of your image in the frequency domain (these lines are caused by the image being non-periodic because the left-right & top-bottom edges usually have differing intensities) and you can mask any unwanted components (steep gradients, that is, edges) in the image that would otherwise show up in and muddle the transformed image. Also, to remove anything but the highest-frequency noise and get a satisfactory result usually requires either masking areas (as I already mentioned) and/or doing FFT on smaller, selected areas of the image. You can see an example of this in the File:Hladisch.jpg image that you worked on: the high-frequency halftone pattern can be removed pretty easily by doing FFT on the whole image, but the low-frequency patterns in the background require masking all other areas to get rid of them without distorting the overall image. I'm sorry that I can't really give you any Photoshop-specific tips, though.
Anyway, I am very glad to see that you are interested in cleaning up images with FFT! There is always a need for people like you on Commons. I guess you have probably already seen the category Images containing regular noise? If you would like to further help with images like these, then User:Quibik/Files by viewcounts/Images containing regular noise is a list of the most viewed & visible images in that category. As you seem to have done watermark removal too, I might as well add an analogous list for watermarked images. Oh, and you should definitely consider joining the Graphic Labs on Commons and/or on English Wikipedia! :)
If you have any other questions, just let me know. —Quibik (talk) 17:13, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That was very helpfull - i'll try gimp today. Those functions sound very usefull and handy (it's a shame that photoshop dosn't offer something like that). I've seen the category and found you too over it, so it would be very nice if you could make that page with the most viewed watermarked pictures too :-) At the moment, i just take random pictures out of the categories and edit them. I'll will try to join the graphics lab, but i'm not sure if my english skills are "high enough" for this. It's not very fluid and mostly i can better read than write it ;-) --Grunpfnul (talk) 07:59, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One Direction 54th Logies Awards[edit]

Photo: description page i asked the global photo graphics to freely license for usage on wikipedia they obliged and so i uploaded commons under creative commons share alike 2.0 and it was reviewed and approved by FlickrevieweR. They sent me a message a few days later saying they want it back as they are selling the photo to something for "exclusive rights" in response they deleted the photo from the flickr account and i removed the image from english wikipedia its global usage is massive though but i do not know what to do now is Wikipedia allowed to keep it anyway as they gave permission first or not?? AdabowtheSecond (talk) 22:03, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Licenses like Creative Commons are irrevocable, so Wikimedia Commons is legally not required to remove a photo if the photographer changes his/her mind along with the license on Flickr. The reviewing process exist exactly for this reason – to prove that the license on an image's description page was indeed correct at one point in time; what it is now does not matter. Still, you can consider opening a deletion request for these images as a courtesy to the photographer but the chances of that succeeding are not very high. Keep in mind though that you might get better advice at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. I am helping you to the best of my knowledge but I am really not an expert in these questions. —Quibik (talk) 08:16, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Time lag in updating[edit]

Hi, I see you have good technical expertise in wiki matters. So, I bring to your attention a discussion I have posted in Village pump‎ about the time lag in system updating when one uploads a new version of an image. Maybe you could suggest something useful to solve the problem. Thanks. --GianniG46 (talk) 20:41, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FFT[edit]

I have also seen that you are an expert in Fourier transform techniques. I invite to have a look to a very good image, File:Jakob Alt - Das Pantheon und die Piazza della Rotonda in Rom - 1836.jpg, which, however, at high resolution shows the "typographic color pattern" (I don't know the proper name of this). I have tried to edit the file, applying a small defocusing to it, and have indeed obtained good results, giving the image better contrast and color. But I think that for cases like this (periodic, regular patterns) FFT tecniques are ideally suited, much better than an unspecific defocusing. So, if you want... --GianniG46 (talk) 21:05, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have appreciated your perfect edit of the Pantheon file. Is it obtained by the Gimp FFT plugin? I have also discovered that the image uploader, Mefusbren69, also uploaded hundreds of beautiful images, most of them taken from (excellent) art books and hence suffering from the same halftone pattern (is this the right name?) defect. Apparently, none of them is in Category:Images containing regular noise. --GianniG46 (talk) 12:42, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. I am very grateful to you. ))))

Good day. How do you remove inscriptions from the images? I want do this operations myself, because there a lot of images with inscriptions I want to download. Do I need some program, or? For example, how can I clean this, and this? --Interfase (talk) 07:56, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know no tool exists specifically for removing watermarks/inscriptions. You can use a general purpose image editing program like GIMP or Adobe Photoshop to accomplish that. But it is usually not a very simple task. To remove a watermark cleanly (that is, not by simply manually painting over each watermark), you need to extract it somehow. For example, here is the watermark I extracted from the images you mentioned (I use my own custom-made program to do that). If you want to remove watermarks from any other fotobank.az, you must do the following in GIMP.
  1. Open the watermarked image.
  2. Colors→Invert.
  3. Copy & paste the extracted watermark image on top of it.
  4. Make sure that the top-left corners of these two image layers are aligned.
  5. Set the watermark image's layer mode to "Divide".
  6. Adjust the watermark layer's opacity until the watermarks are completely invisible.
  7. Image→Flatten Image.
  8. Colors→Invert.
After these steps you should have a nice, watermarkless image. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. —Quibik (talk) 17:07, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I stucked on step 5. I cannot find how to divide. --Interfase (talk) 19:31, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Select Windows→Dockable Dialogs→Layers. In the window that opened or was highlighted, you should see "Mode: Normal". That is the drop-down list from which you will need to pick "Divide". The opacity setting (for the next step) is right under that menu item, too. —Quibik (talk) 22:54, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Now it's OK. Tänan väga. Can you send to me links of following extracted watermark images:[4], [5], [6] [7]? And fotobank.az watermark image below of images? --Interfase (talk) 14:03, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Can you help to upload a photo (without signatures on the photo) this person [8] for this article about him [9] and photos of the Red Army in Baku in 1920 [10] (this name "11-ci Qızıl Ordunun zirehli qatarı Bakı vağzalında") [11] (this name "11-ci Qızıl Ordu Bakıda")? I will be very grateful to you.

I think this image should extend to include Azerbaijan which is European as well. The arbitrary cutoff point is IMHO too arbitrary. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 17:32, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Dezoomify does not support this zooming software, but that does not even matter in this case. You can already download the full-resolution version by clicking the leftmost button at the top (this one). The image will be in JPEG2000 format (hence the .jp2 extension), which can be easily converted to a regular JPEG image. With GIMP, for example. —Quibik (talk) 18:23, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Estonian euro coins[edit]

Hi, could you please cite the OTRS number of the e-mail mentioned in this edit? It's in regard to Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Euro coins (1 cent). Thank you. --Eleassar (t/p) 13:18, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do I correctly understand that "Eesti Pangale kuuluvad euromündi rahvusliku külje varalised õigused. Mittevaralised autoriõigused, sh õigus teose autorlusele, kuuluvad kujunduskavandi autorile. Seega on korrektne viidata kujunduskavandi autorile." from ticket:2008071410045309 means:

  • the material copyright holder on the national side of the Estonian euro coins is the bank and not the author
  • the reply does not give any permission for their free reproduction

Thank you. --Eleassar (t/p) 13:49, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have never seen that e-mail in the OTRS system, which I've never had access to. The info I added to the Currency page and EEK banknote template originated from et:Kasutaja:Boy/Autorikaitse#Eesti_krooni_kasutuse_kohta (I regret that I did not mention that in any of my edits). The "copy of e-mail forwarded to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org at 14.07.2008" bit was added later by User:WikedKentaur (diff). Maybe you are able to find the e-mail in the OTRS system by its date and @epbe.ee domain? None of this any bearing on the national sides of Estonian euro coins, though.
The ticket's content would be translated as follows: "The Bank of Estonia owns the economic rights [as defined in $13 of Estonian Copyright Law, I guess] of the national side of the Estonian euro coins. Non-economic rights, including authorship rights[?], belong to the author of the design. So referring to the author of the design would be the correct way." So, no mention is made of providing any permissions or releasing of rights. Hope this helps. —Quibik (talk) 12:45, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it does help a lot. Can you please also translate the question: "Kas eesti euromündi jaoks välja valitud kavandi kasutamisel piisab, kui pildi autorina viidata Eesti Pangale?" Thank you very much for your help. --Eleassar (t/p) 14:13, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That is "Is referring to the Bank of Estonia as the author sufficient when using the design of the Estonian euro coin?" —Quibik (talk) 17:37, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. --Eleassar (t/p) 19:00, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

John Owen Dominis[edit]

Hi. Can you help do a minimal crop of File:John Owen Dominis (PP-71-2-022).jpg? I am not positive where the white background ends and the image begins. Also if you can clean it up a bit or any scratches. Thanks.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 06:15, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Quibik, please explain what benefits offers your edit compared to my version. Is it the hard edge selection, which seems to be a reminiscent of a shear cut by childrens hand or the lower contrast which brings no additional details to light. I ask you for verifiable reasons. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 19:43, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MagentaGreen. The only reason I edited the image and did it from scratch was to remove the halftone pattern with minimal loss of detail (using FFT). All of my other edits were made to mostly restore the modifications done by you, which I did not have any issue with whatsoever. Feel free to re-do any of them, as this is precisely the reason why I uploaded my edits as separate steps. Cheers, Quibik (talk) 08:55, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for reply. I would be satisfied if the light-dark transitions might be a little softer at the edges, the contrast should be increased slightly and overall the picture should be brighter. Furthermore there was no evidence of a moiré pattern, which should have been removed with FFT. Regards MagentaGreen (talk) 09:46, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Your suggested edits seem fine to me and I would not mind at all if you implemented them. So go ahead. The moire patterns are somewhat subtle but they were definitely there and well suited removal with FFT (compare: [31] vs [32]). —Quibik (talk) 10:13, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If I may interject, Quibik edited this image at my request. The original image has a halftone pattern and your edit, which I assume used some kind of smart blur, lost an enormous amount of detail. Using an FFT filter instead removes the halftone pattern and preserves the data, and I have found Quibik to be highly skilled at this, hence the request. My intention was to clean up the image after Quibik had filtered the image, so I've just uploaded an edit for consideration. Regards, nagualdesign (talk) 20:28, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

...I just realized that in my original request I noted that Quibik handles images with kid gloves. Funny how MagentaGreen saw Quibik's efforts as "reminiscent of a shear cut by childrens hand". :-D Oh well, you can't please all of the people all of the time, eh? Regards, nagualdesign (talk) 20:58, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would argue that such subtle differences in the final editing stage are no longer noticeable and therefore, whether present or not they are of no importance. Please go on to edit your work and then decide for yourself how an improvement can be achieved. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 21:21, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
*sigh..* I'm sorry if you feel irritated, but as we have tried to explain there was good reason to perform an FFT filter before any subsequent retouching. Quibik then evidently attempted to re-do the edit as you had done it (whitened background), but you didn't like it. In fact you were quite rude (contrary to AGF), and although your own edit summary had included "Halftone patterns blurred", you seem to have failed to understand what the filter achieved. I've been using Photoshop professionally for about 13 years yet I defer to Quibik's expertise when it comes to this sort of work. He's very good at it. I would suggest that if you can't see the difference, or think the edits are too subtle to be noticeable, perhaps you have nothing to complain about. Whatever, I tried it another way is all, and you are free to make your own edits, using the FFT filtered image uploaded by Quibik. No hard feelings, nagualdesign (talk) 22:49, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, you screwed yourself in this discussion and you was also not the addressee of the message. You've changed the order twice by using the template {{Outdent}} as well by deletion of the same template as I used. I was not going to answer you, and wants to be not obliged. Whether your move is particularly polite, is a separate question.
You're accusing me of being rude, please tell me where this is the case.
Apart from that in your argumentation arises the question of whether only Photoshop veterans have the right to an opinion. That seems to be a very strange attitude and how do you know how long I myself work with this program?
It simply revolves around the question of whether anything is left over from the alleged details if contrast and brightness are corrected and Mr. Severances white shirt does not need in the laundry. MagentaGreen (talk) 07:48, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Nagualdesign: Dear sir or lady, do not want to clarify your allegation?
Add to this the question why you have soiled the background in the latest version again?
Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 05:24, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This has become an exercise in futility. I have nothing more to add. nagualdesign (talk) 18:29, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I do not insist for an answer anymore in face of such profound arguments, but maybe you could take this rules (AGF) to heart (a dear counsel for the future). Farewell, MagentaGreen (talk) 19:33, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Halftone?[edit]

Some months back, you removed the halftones from File:Theresa Susey Helen Talbot, 6th Marchioness of Londonderry (circa 1903).jpg; I've since uploaded a version that is of much higher resolution (because I've discovered a better way to extract images from ChroniclingAmerica). Can you strip the halftone from the new version too? Thanks. DS (talk) 23:36, 13 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have a go at it some time in hopefully not too distant future. Would you like me to reproduce the retouching I did in here, too? Also, is there any particular reason why this image is not used in any Wikimedia projects? —Quibik (talk) 23:43, 13 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! Yes, please. As for why it's not in use: no article about the Marchioness yet exists. I'm sure one will, eventually -- and actually, now that I think of it, we might as well add this image to the article on her husband. DS (talk) 13:54, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Cayley sketches[edit]

I'm still a bit new, sorry about that. I think I've got the hang of it now though. I've determined that the original copyright owner is happy for that particular image to be on wikipedia. He wouldn't have any moral rights anymore anyway if a photograph taken in Australia before 1969, in this case 1963, goes out of copyright in 50 years.

Code issues in User:Quibik/vector.js[edit]

Hi Quibik, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Quibik/vector.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for your cleanup in File:Antonio_Tamburini_as_Valdeburgo_in_Bellinis_La_straniera,_Milan_1829.png and others. I tried it myself, but did not get so good results. I think, the description in Commons:Cleaning up interference with Fourier analysis is a bit incomplete. At least I did not understand this part: "Now you can manipulate the spectrum of the picture. Do as suggested in the previous section of the tutorial with an important exception…" Where is this section? I used gimp on a linux system with the Fourier plugin and cleaned some parts with the paintbrush. But that didn't remove the bleed-through text. How did you do it? --Rodomonte (talk) 08:21, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! I think you did a very good job considering how incomplete the tutorial is. I definitely did not expect you to go through all that effort.
If you want to also get rid of the bleed-through text you will need to take extra steps. The drawing in the center of the image overpowers the signal from the text in the background in the spectrum image, making the frequency spikes impossible to distinguish. Even if you could see those peaks, erasing those parts of the spectrum would distort and ruin the drawing. Because of this you will need to somehow mask out parts of the image you don't want to modify. What I do is more or less:
  • Create a new transparent layer.
  • Set the color to the color of the background.
  • Use the pencil (you want painted the edges to be sharp) and draw over the parts you want to mask (drawing on the new layer).
  • Right click on the new layer and do "new from visible" to get a merged image. Do "remove alpha channel" as well.
  • Do the forward FFT. I highly recommend also creating a new #888888-colored layer on top of it and setting its blending mode to "difference", this gives you a view of the amplitude of the spectrum.
  • Look for two dim frequency spikes above and below very close to the center of the spectrum image. Erase them by drawing over them with color #888888. There are probably a few more spikes or streaks further away from the center that you will likely need to clean as well to get a clear image.
  • Do the reverse FFT.
  • Now use the magic wand selection tool to select the masked region in the transparent layer. Do "add alpha channel" on the cleaned up layer. Press "delete" to erase the masked part.
  • Make the irrelevant layers invisible or delete them and merge the cleaned up layer with the layer you started with.
You now should have an image without the bleed-through text. I did some additional minor tweaks on top of that but this should cover most of it. If this looks awfully complicated, then don't worry, it took me quite a while to figure all of that out when I started. Feel free to ask any further questions, if you're curious. —Quibik (talk) 13:42, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the detailed answer. I will give it a try. About 25 of my older uploads still need that processing. --Rodomonte (talk) 16:02, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am working with Prof. Steven LaValle to help obtain permissions for borrowing figures or pictures in his upcoming book Virtual Reality, to be published by Cambridge University Press. The book is online here:

We are hoping to include the picture of yours in this book (Chapter 1, Figure 1.22d). Could we please have your permission for this? Thank you.

Sincerely,

Description presented in the image of the Coat of arms of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board.[edit]

Dear Quibik,

Please, I found an error, perhaps in the translation of the Estonian language into English, or perhaps even a simple writing error in the original Estonian language text. The mistake is to describe the lion as a cowardly animal, when it is obviously a non-cowardly animal. I am referring naturally to the description presented in the image of the Coat of arms of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board. Thank you for your collaboration.

Need a logo uploaded[edit]

You were the one who uploaded the logo that needs to be replaced.

I'm a few months behind and this help desk question on English Wikipedia got a response, but the suggested action did not take place. The specific need is described here and I checked the article but the change has not happened. I marked the question as resolved but until the logo is uploaded I guess it shouldn't be. I have the image in my computer but I'm not sure how to replace the old logo.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:54, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Ion C. Inculeţ (1884-1940), President of Moldavian Democratic Republic.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Ion C. Inculeţ (1884-1940), President of Moldavian Democratic Republic.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
