Goodies, tips, and tricks Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities. You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads. Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Category:Gorky Street, Barnaul, Category:Gorky Street, Novosibirsk

Добрый день! Я думаю, вы были не правы при переименовании этих категорий: улицы в Барнауле и Новосибирске официально называются именно "Максима Горького" ([1],[2]). Противоположный пример: допустим, просто улица Горького в Казани. Сокращение в данном случае - это искажение. На мой взгляд, уместнее было бы поставить перенаправляющий шаблон. --INS Pirat (talk) 02:18, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

• Привет, коллега! Обращу Ваше внимание на то, что наименование категорий производится так, чтобы их легко было распознать, т.е. упрощенно, а иногда даже и сокращённо (см. Commons:Naming categories). Поэтому улица Максима Горького сокращается до улица Горького (при этом замечу, что обе улицы однозначно идентифицируются как объект, названный в честь известного русского писателя, и никаких ошибок тут быть не может). --Truelz (talk) 05:16, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Владимир Гау

Зачем вы сделали это[3] и то же самое со всеми портретами Гау? Из-за вас категория Category:Vladimir Hau теперь пустая!!! Мне приходится руками делать заново поиск по всем вариантам написания имени художника и искать все файлы и добавлять категорию обратно. Если вас не устроило название по-английски, берете и ПЕРЕКЛАДЫВАЕТЕ в другую категорию, а не УДАЛЯЕТЕ. У вас еще не достаточно опыта - пожалуйста, не предпринимайте столь масштабных операций. --Shakko (talk) 14:17, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Truelz,

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.
