Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Xwejnusgozo!

Hi Xwejnusgozo, thank you very much for identifying and categorizing the ships. You saved me a lot of time and effort! -- Ies (talk) 15:34, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Eastern on Malta[edit]

Over Eastern I will be on Malta again. Do you have any suggestion which Eastern or Good Friday procession is worth visiting? I read in the web that there are several, but I'm missing closer information: At what place and at what time will a procession take place? Can you help me? Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 13:29, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Siġġiewi?[edit]

Hi, there seems a misunderstanding regarding File:Malta scouts annual parade 2012 n04.jpg. Although the image was taken in Valletta and not any part of Siġġiewi is visible you nevertheless gave it two times Category:Siġġiewi. Why? I only can guess that you mean something different than you categorized. Please enlighten me. -- Ies (talk) 17:13, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The picture shows a scout from the Siġġiewi Scout Group. -- Xwejnusgozo (talk) 18:35, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is a statue of "Hugo Mifsud". Might Ugo Mifsud Bonniċi be meant? -- Ies (talk) 16:02, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, the statue is of Ugo Pasquale Mifsud, the 3rd Prime Minister of Malta. This Roman numerals at the bottom are his year of birth and death (MDCCCLXXXIX = 1889 and MDCCCCXLII = 1942).
Ugo Mifsud Bonnici is still alive, and a monument for him will only be made after his death (eg. Guido de Marco died in 2010 and they unveiled a monument in front of the Valletta courthouse last July, and Dom Mintoff died in 2012 and a monument will be unveiled in Cospicua next December) -- Xwejnusgozo (talk) 17:27, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! -- Ies (talk) 14:08, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't the so called Kalkara Naval Cemetery actually located in Xgħajra? -- Ies (talk) 14:08, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you are right. I changed the categories and now it should be OK.--Xwejnusgozo (talk) 14:31, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you upload more images of Malta, I'd be happy to help categorize them. By the way, there were some pretty good photos especially those of Misraħ il-Ħelsien before it was redeveloped to house the new parliament building, so not a failure in any way. --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 15:49, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template:IMO[edit]

Template:IMO, which should be used in categories categorized in Category:Ships by IMO number, applies the IMO number as default sorting key for these categories. Thus, it is not necessary to define a custom sorting key in these categories as long as they contain the IMO template (see also User talk:4ing#Category:Ships by IMO number). Currently, 40 of the entries in Category:Ships by IMO number are sorted under I and not the number. The IMO template should be added to these categories for correct sorting. - Kind regards 4ing (talk) 16:20, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Hello. Can you make sure that the categories that you add are the most suitable? Some of the recent edits that you made to the photos from JennyHuang should have been in categories that are lower in the hierarchy. BTW, the locations given in the geocodes in the images from JennyHuang are often incorrect. Regards. Alan Liefting (talk) 23:36, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to add the categories which seemed most suitable, which I got mostly from the geocodes. I was trying to categorize a few of the many thousands of uncategorized files so I didn't have time to recheck every single category. Best regards, --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 20:07, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Birgu[edit]

Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 15:51, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I found that the gate which is shown in this image is referred to by a number of names: Admiralty Gate, Victualling Yard Gate, Vittoriosa Waterfront Gate and Dockyard Gate. Of these names, I think the most appropriate is "Admiralty Gate". This gate is located at Xatt il-Forn, roughly between the church of St Lawrence and the maritime museum. By the way, I think the name of the street is Xatt il-Forn not Xatt il-Birgu as it is called in this category, so perhaps you can arrange this.
  • Regarding the second gate, I don't know to which one you are referring to exactly. If you have an image, could you show me so I'll see if I can help.
  • I don't know exactly the name or purpose of the arches in the ditch. They might be a covertway, but I'm not sure about this.
  • The Malta at War Museum is located in the Couvre Porte, as mentioned here. Note that Couvre Porte refers to a heavily fortified area with three gates, and not just this gate (this category also needs to be rearranged).
That's all for now. Unfortunately, I don't know the Cottonera area very well and it's been ages since I was there. I wish I could help more. Best regards --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 19:42, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This very new user is uploading images of Gozo and might need some assistance. See for instance File:Marsalforn3.jpg. Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 18:24, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I added the Category:Marsalforn to three of the four images, and I created a new category (Category:Tas-Salvatur Hill) for another one. All images in the Marsalforn category need to be categorized more accurately, and if I find some time, I'll try and do it. :) --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 19:00, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bots[edit]

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. File:Emmanuel Vitale stamp.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for creating Category:Castellania (Valletta) and recategorizing some of the images I transferred over from enwp. The more specific category is better given the number of images; I probably should have done so myself. I appreciate it! Cheers, Nick (talk) 21:51, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Message from User:Bengt Nyman[edit]

Hi Xwejnusgozo, I agree. I see a lot of duplicate uploads made by somebody else from Panoramio. I believe this can be the result of Google shutting down Panoramio and transferring these files to Google Archive, but by some kind of mistake they end up on Wikimedia Commons. I think people at Wikimedia Commons need to talk to Google (Panoramio) before you get millions of duplicates. Bengt Nyman (talk) 17:25, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Casa Said[edit]

Kindly note that Part of Casa Said in Tower Road still stands.Continentaleurope (talk) 23:36, 16 September 2017 (UTC) Continentaleurope (talk) 23:36, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Continentaleurope: I don't think that the building shown in this photo is Casa Said. Photos and illustrations of the house show that it is not the same building. Moreover, Casa Said was located on a corner, and several books mention that the building was demolished. --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 08:35, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sources seem to be contradicting each other but leave it as it is for now.Continentaleurope (talk) 12:02, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Continentaleurope: Are there any sources which mention that part of the house still stands? --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 12:30, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure where the source is but probably the source made an erroneous claim based on their similarity. The source said that part of the house and the room or tower above it were demolished while the rest stand. The question still remains that the photos show two parts of houses very similar to Casa Said. Where these designed or inspired by the original architect? Due the sources we have, it is better to leave it as they claim (demolished).Continentaleurope (talk) 12:48, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Also, is the photo in the public domain? I found it on fb and seems (year) not copyrighted, but the one you send has a page number which would need to be cut off if uploaded.Continentaleurope (talk) 12:54, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Matrimonial stamp[edit]

The Sandafayre source states 1858-1866. Do you have a catalogue that gives only 1966 as the issue date? Ww2censor (talk) 22:04, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

According to Barefoot, there were two versions of this stamp: a lilac stamp issued in 1858, and a blue stamp issued in 1866.(Source: (2010) United Kingdom Revenues (5th ed.), York: J. Barefoot Ltd., p. 119 ISBN: 0906845696. ) I added the 1866 date since that's when the blue stamp was issued, I noticed this as I'm currently rewriting the en:Revenue stamps of the United Kingdom article and I am going to use this image in the article. --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 22:15, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
